Learning to learn in an remote environment means that you will need to redesign your day to accommodate what might be different approaches to the delivery of your coursework.
Some of your coursework may be delivered in a synchronous way which means that your instructor will be online at whatever time your class has been meeting and will continue to deliver the course content in real time to you. Some courses may be delivered in an asynchoronous fashion which means that the course content will be made available to you and you will be able to access it on your own time. Some courses may be a blending of both. Your professors will be communicating to you regarding how they intend to manage particular courses.
Searching the web using an inquiry like "how to be successful in online learning" will produce many links with different tips. Here are a few tips that seem to be present in many of those links.
1. Make certain your technology works and can manage tools like Zoom, etc.
2. Be aware of how your course will be delivered and the expectations your professor has of you.
3. Decide how your days will look based on synchronous vs asychronous delivery methods.
4. Establish a schedule to which you adhere each day.
5. Designate a place where your course instruction and learning will take place, (i.e., a particular room in your house) that is away from distractions.
6. Take notes in both synchronous and asynchronous settings; videos assigned as part of the course delivery are not just for watching, they are intended to be part of the content delivery. Take notes on those as you would in a lecture.
7. Be disciplined and stay up to date with content delivery. Attending class may look different in a remote setting, but it is still expected and important.
8. Set aside time to 'do homework' apart from attending class incorporating whatever setting you are accustomed to using when you do your homework (i.e. listening to music).
9. Be attentive to deadlines for assessments, projects, papers, etc., they are still 'real' in a virtual learning environment; avoid being tempted to put things off because you are not in a classroom setting.
10. Ask questions of your professors if you are confused about content, processes for submitting assignments, exams, etc.; don't let the questions pile up.
11. Virtually connect with other classmates via Zoom, Google Hangout, or other conferencing platforms to study and discuss content, just as you would in an on-site setting (assuming your professor is OK with your discussing certain things with others). You do not have to do this alone (unless it is an assignment or exam that your professor requires you to do alone).
12. Practice expected integrity standards on exams, assignments, etc. as provided by your professors.
13. Schedule breaks into your day just as you would have if you were on campus; developing a pace for your day is important.
Support for Student Success
The Academic Success Center is committed to providing continued support for your academic success. Tutoring services, writing studio, math lab, etc., normally offered by the ASC will be delivered virtually with the same tutors who work on-site in the ASC. It may take a little accommodation by both you and the tutor to make the remote session productive, but we will do everything we can to make the process of connecting with a tutor as convenient and accessible as possible.
Most of the remote tutoring will incorporate Zoom. So, make certain your technology is properly equipped. Below you will find more details about tutoring. If you have problems or questions you can always email the ASC at academicsuccesscenter@lipscomb.edu.
Tutoring
All tutoring previously available in the Academic Success Center will now be available through Zoom sessions. A reminder about the tutoring schedule will be emailed weekly to you every Sunday. Access the tutoring schedule for the coming week (Sunday - Saturday) by going to the ASC page on myLipscomb, https://mycampus.lipscomb.edu/web/Academic-Success-Center/home. Once you are at the schedule, clicking on the link appropriate for your need during the scheduled time will connect you with a tutor. Just as occurs when you visit the ASC on campus, other students may be receiving tutoring by the same tutor. The tutors will do their best to serve all students as efficiently and thoughtfully as possible.
The tutoring schedule can also be found on the ASC page on myLipscomb. (https://mycampus.lipscomb.edu/web/Academic-Success-Center/home) In order to participate in the tutoring sessions you will need to have access to Zoom.
The tutoring opportunities will include sessions in Math Lab, Biology recitation, Computer Science and Peer2Peer tutoring. Tutoring offered by the Physics and Chemistry departments will also be included in this schedule.
If you need help with a subject area not covered in a scheduled block session, please email the Academic Success Center (academicsuccesscenter@lipscomb.edu) with your name, course name and available day and times. We will see if any of our available tutors can help with your question and set up an individual session.
