This has been a year of major change for our learning area, with the introduction of a rich new syllabus, filled with a range of engaging texts from short stories to novels, films, non-fiction, documentaries, short films and folklore.
Students in ELL have begun learning English through the lens of storytelling, and they’ve been producing excellent work that reflects their learning in the form of speeches, creative writing, essays, response writing and spoken presentations.
As we look towards 2024, we are planning to bring in even more new material to support beginner language learners, particularly in
the junior syllabus. Year 7s will have the opportunity to read condensed versions of several classic novels, Year 8s will also have a new reading unit, and Year 9s will explore more New Zealand-based non-fiction.
Students in ELL have proven themselves to be both adaptable and highly capable this year as they’ve adjusted to a new way of doing things. We are excited to see how they will continue to accelerate their language acquisition in 2024. Literacy opens doors, and that’s what we want to do for our students with this program.
