Videos & Captioning

In order for videos to be accessible, they must contain both captioning and corresponding transcripts.

Captioning & Transcripts in YouTube Videos

Turning on captioning in a YouTube video is simple. On the video menu that appears at the bottom of a YouTube video, there is a "CC" (closed captioning) button. Click it and the captions will appear.

Getting the transcripts for YouTube videos is just as easy. On the YouTube video webpage, under the title of the video, there is another menu that shows thumbs up and thumbs down for the video. To the far right of this menu is a button with three horizontal dots. Click this button and select "Open transcript" from the menu. The transcript will now be visible to the right of the video.

NOTE: Not all YouTube videos have these options. If yours doesn't, it would be a good idea to find another that does have them and contains the same content. If you are unable to find another suitable video, follow the steps for videos without captioning and transcripts below.

Videos without Captioning & Transcripts

LBCC does have a process involving Media Services to have closed captioning and transcripts developed for videos.

The AV Closed Captioning Request Form can be used to request to have a video or digital file closed captioned for instructional use at LBCC. Be sure to request at least two weeks prior to when you need the final product. Developing closed captioning and transcripts can take time.
