Disability Awareness Month

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, National Disability Awareness Month (also called National Disability Employment Awareness Month) "is a national campaign that raises awareness about disability employment issues and celebrates the many and varied contributions of America's workers with disabilities". In 1945, Congress enacted a law that declared the first week of October "National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week". In 1962, the terminology used was changed and "physically" was removed to recognize the employment needs and contributions of individuals with various types of disabilities. Finally, in 1988, Congress expanded the week to a month and coined to name we know today.
