I can read books written at a third grade level with fluency and comprehension.

Fiction Books

1. I can answer questions about a fiction text and use evidence from the text to support my answer.

2. I can retell the main points of a story and figure out what the theme of the story is.

3. I can describe a character's traits, actions, and feelings, and figure out how it adds to or changes the story. 

4. I can understand the parts of a poem or a play to understand it better.

5. I can make an opinion about things that happen in a book and see if I agree or disagree with the narrator.

6. I can explain how illustrations can give more information about a story and help create a mood for the reader.

7. I can compare and contrast two texts written by the same author with similar themes or characters. 

Non-Fiction Books

1. I can answer questions about a non-fiction text and use evidence from the text to support my answer.

2. I can find the main idea of a text.

3. I can figure out how the author organized the information (by order, problem and solution, or cause and effect)

4. I can identify and explain text features.

5. I can figure out how the author feels about a topic they are writing about and decide if I agree or disagree with their ideas.

6. I can use text features to learn more about the topic of the text.

7. I can compare and contrast two texts about the same topic.
