Above are all of the sounds made by the English alphabet. If you hit the speaker sound you will hear the sound. The lips show how you should make your lips when saying these sounds. The words below are examples of words with that sound and the different ways you make those sounds. It can be confusing because the sound in the rectangle can be made using different groups of letters. For example, cloud and cow have the same vowel sound but one is spelled with ou and the other is spelled with ow but are both listed under the ou sound.

By third grade, a typical third grader should know these sounds and read one-syllable words easily that contain these sounds. If that is not the case we will continue to work towards that goal in small groups. In whole group phonics, we will continue practicing these sounds with longer (multisyllabic) words.
