What to expect:
Although our pastor leads worship, we are a community that believes strongly that we are at our best when everyone contributes. Because of that, when you attend a service you will notice:
§ Children who feel comfortable being children and are celebrated as such
§ Regular opportunities to reflect on personal events, news items and scripture readings from around the world
§ Integration of the arts - occasional art, drama, dance, or instrumental music
§ Quiet moments of meditation and prayer
§ Great music and singing
§ And, of course, people of diverse ages, with much or little church experience, in married or unmarried relationship (expressing various sexual orientations), with divergent cultural, ethnic and educational backgrounds, coming together to share their sense of the holy and find joy in the wisdom of others.
We invite you to journey with us. Come check us out and see if we are the church home you have been looking for.
What to wear:
Wear your mask or not, as you are comfortable.
Come to worship dressed however you feel most comfortable. You will see folks in shorts or jeans, cycling gear, and some in their "Sunday best." We are a diverse group of humans who respect you and want you to come as you are.
What you'll hear:
Even though we're a small congregation, we have some powerful voices! Music is a big part of our worship, with a mix of traditional hymns and more eclectic styles. Our pianist has a wide repertoire of secular music and you will catch tunes from beyond the church world.
Our prayers are a unique and powerful part of worship at Lincoln Street Church. Members share their prayers of concern aloud with the congregation. You will hear people remembering loved ones who are ill and those experiencing struggle and injustices across the globe. Following this, we remember how this life is also filled with goodness and moments where we witness God’s presence. We share these joys and celebrations as candles on the communion table are lit. This open sharing of needs and joys offers a truly authentic conversation with God and fosters real connections among us.
We also always set aside time in each service for reflections of the community. This is a free-flowing conversation among us, prompted by the question, “What have you been pondering this morning or this week? What can you share so that we all grow together in faith?” Sometimes reflections tie to something in the service. And sometimes it’s about what happened at work or in the news or in one’s personal life. One remark will spark a whole cascade of conversation. This is a rich and meaningful part of how we practice our faith together.
Who you'll meet:
We are a diverse group of people coming from all walks of life. The children at Lincoln Street Church play a vital role in the life of our community. You will get a sense of that as children participate in and help lead worship up through the children's chat, and as they come and go freely throughout the worship service. They go to class about a third of the way into worship, so you may also hear an eruption of laughter coming from the basement during the message. These sounds bring us such joy and gratitude!
Besides the children, you will see people of all ages, and a wide variety of careers and backgrounds. Some who have made church a part of their life for decades and others who are trying out the “church thing” for the first time.
Accessibility:
Our sanctuary is fully accessible via the front steps at the corner of Lincoln Street and 52ndAvenue. There’s a door directly into the basement on 52nd Ave. And an elevator is located on the west corner of the church, off Lincoln Street. There are also a variety of seating options, if pews aren't your thing. In the adjoining fireside room, we have chairs available and one can also sit on the floor and stretch out.
For communion we serve only gluten free bread and grape juice (rather than wine).
Coffee hour:
The coolest thing about Lincoln Street Church is the community. Join us every Sunday for coffee hour, right after the service. During the rainy months, we meet in the basement. But you'll find us outside as often as possible, on the 52nd Ave. side of the church.
Coffee hour is where we catch up with one another on life events, get to know new friends, and continue reflections that begin during worship. Plus, there’s always a fun nibble or two to try!
