We honor and recognize the traditional and indigenous people on whose ancestral and unceded land we now worship. Many tribes lived along the Columbia and Willamette Rivers and traded in the Portland metropolitan area including the Multnomah (a band of the Chinook), Wasco, Cowlitz, Klamath, Clackamas, Tualatin, Kalapuya, and Molalla. We honor their history and diversity, and we acknowledge we are here because of the sacrifices forced upon them. In remembering these communities, we honor their legacy, their lives, and their descendants.
We grieve the role of the Methodist church in the history of colonization and forced assimilation through Indian boarding schools. Methodists helped perpetuate the concept that Native children should be stripped of their language, culture and heritage. We commit to supporting the wider church as it studies this history and seeks to make amends for the wrongs it perpetrated. And, we seek to find ways to respectfully engage in restorative relationships with indigenous people, knowing that this work is an ongoing journey of the community of Lincoln Street Church.
