Fire in Building/Venue
Fire in Building/Venue
Any sign of fire or smoke within the building would constitute a code red being called and would begin the evacuation process.
If you notice smoke or a fire call a code red over the radio.
When calling a Code Red: State your position or location and call for a supervisor or manager over the radio. (ie. Gallery 2 to Supervisor. Wait for a response. When you have received a response say “we have a Code Red at Main Entry”). You may be asked to switch over to our private channel (channel 6) to provide more detailed information while a supervisor or manager is on their way to your location, if so state what has caused you to call the Code Red (ie. you see smoke, an active fire, etc.)
If you are in immediate danger, prioritise your own safety and leave the area. When management/supervisor responds Inform them of where the Code Red is.
At the first sign of fire/smoke within the venue, immediately radio a supervisor or on duty AVM and inform them of the situation. Have them call 911 and/or activate the fire alarm if it has not gone off yet already.
If you encounter fire/smoke, evacuate the area immediately.
DO NOT PUT YOURSELF OR OTHERS AT RISK. IF YOU ARE UNSURE OR THE FIRE CANNOT BE EASILY EXTINGUISHED, LEAVE THE AREA AND CONTAIN THE FIRE BY CLOSING THE DOOR .
Fire extinguishers are available throughout the building, but are meant to be used by trained personnel and this responsibility will fall onto the shoulders of the Toronto Fire Department, if you cannot safely or easily extinguish a fire, leave the area IMMEDIATELY.
If you encounter smoke on your way to an emergency exit, assess the situation and make your way to another exit where you can exit the building safely.
Floor Wardens:
Sarah Van Dusen - Venue Manager
Aidan Gould - Venue Manager
Stair Monitors, Floor Searchers, Assistance Monitors, and management stations will be posted in the tor-all-call slack channel as well as the staff room. This will be updated daily to ensure everyone is aware of their roles.
Management and Supervisors will stay on Channel one unless instructed to move to a private channel (channel 6).
In the event of a fire the floor warden will assign different roles to operational staff in order to assist in the evacuation process. The roles are outlined below:
Stair Monitors
Responsible for the supervision of the occupants in an orderly evacuation of their office spaces/positions into the stairwells.
Fire and stairwell doors must remain closed at all times. Aisles, corridors, landings, stairwells and exits must be free of obstructions.
Before opening the stairwell, office, or room door, check for smoke and feel the door for heat: If the door is hot or smoke appears at the edges, do not open. Direct occupants to the nearest alternate exit. Dispatch a person of your selection to inform the fire warden of the condition
Floor Searchers
Responsible for the initiation and supervision of an orderly evacuation of occupants from their assigned office spaces to their stair monitors. Conduct a systematic check of the floor, including office areas, meeting rooms, washrooms, storage rooms, elevator lobbies and stairwells, looking for smoke or fire.
Be familiar with your floor areas, exits from the floor to the area of assembly (at least 150 m from the building), and the locations of firefighting equipment.
Be familiar with personnel on your respective floors/areas who require assistance to evacuate.
Assistance Monitors
Responsible for assisting persons requiring assistance to a safe area beside or within the stairwells to await assistance from the building Response Team or the authorities.
Management Personnel have to ensure that everyone has left the building and proceed to the Safe Meeting Place a.k.a Muster Point, closing all doors behind them.
