Why do we offer second language development at Lighthouse?
Learning multiple languages at the primary school level is important for several reasons:
Cognitive Benefits: Learning multiple languages at a young age can enhance cognitive/thinking abilities. It improves problem-solving skills, memory, and multitasking abilities. Children who are bilingual or multilingual often exhibit better cognitive flexibility and creativity.
Cultural Understanding: Learning a second language exposes children to different cultures, traditions, and perspectives. It fosters cultural empathy and understanding, promoting a more tolerant and inclusive society. French, being a widely spoken language with a rich cultural heritage, allows Mauritian students to connect with the francophone world and appreciate its diversity.
Economic Opportunities: In today's globalised world, proficiency in multiple languages is a valuable asset. French is not only an official language in many countries, but is also widely spoken in business, tourism, diplomacy, and international organisations. Mastery of French opens up job opportunities both locally and internationally for our children in the future.
Educational Advantages: Learning a second language from a young age can improve academic performance overall. It enhances literacy skills, including reading, writing, and comprehension, which can positively impact performance in other subjects. Additionally, bilingual or multilingual children tend to achieve better academic results.
Preservation of National Heritage: In Mauritius, French is one of the main languages of instruction alongside English and Mauritian Creole. Offering French as a second language in our primary schools helps us to preserve the linguistic heritage of the country and ensures that future generations maintain proficiency in this language.
Enhanced Communication Skills: Learning multiple languages enhances communication skills, both verbal and non-verbal. It enables students to communicate effectively with people from diverse linguistic backgrounds, promoting social integration and cooperation.
Personal Growth: Learning a new language is a challenging but rewarding experience. It boosts confidence, resilience, and adaptability as students navigate the complexities of language acquisition. It also encourages a lifelong love for learning and an appreciation for linguistic diversity.
Overall, offering French as a second language at Lighthouse primary schools not only provides practical benefits but also enriches our children's lives culturally, intellectually, and personally. It equips them with valuable skills and perspectives that will serve them well throughout their academic and professional careers.
