In this section we will explain some mind tricks to help you stay more concentrated and to not lose focus on your studies.
FORBIDDEN TO DO:
study the day before (if you study the day before, you may, in your haste, miss out on some detail that could be important for the test, such as a formula or an odd procedure, and it is unlikely that everything you have read and reviewed will have stuck in your mind)
summarise but not too much
keep sources of distraction away
Postpone (you mustn't postpone because we accumulate work day after day, even if it's just a little, it will eventually be a mountain).
Eating( Another thing to avoid is the food break: you think you can do what you have seen done in millions of TV series and films, i.e. study while eating, but the result will be more or less like the following: you are in the library, you get something from the machine and you go back to the desk)
Answering a message (Your phone rings in the distance. You know that looking at it is a waste of time, so you resist the temptation to go near the screen. And yet your curiosity becomes obsessive... What if it's an emergency? What if the world needs you?)
How to keep focused on your goals
The first useful tip we have for you is to always have an ambitious objective in your head. This will help your mind to be more concentrated and as a consequence it will produce more. Every time you are working on a project there will always be that time you feel you are wasting your time and you should give up; to avoid this negative thinking you should create a plan to follow, this way you will not lose motivation and most importantly time because you will always know what to do. If you are on the edge of giving up, remember what you have done to get to this point, all of your sacrifices you had made till this point would be worthless, do you really want an end like this?
Moreover, at the start of your project you shouldn’t overwork yourself, instead, we suggest you to start with little tasks and subsequently add on.
Anti Procrastination Tips
An element you should always avoid when studying is procrastination; in brief, procrastination means to delay or postpone something. Every time there’s something to do our brain will put off the work you have to do. Usually, the main reason for distraction in young guys is the smartphone: people keep using smartphones instead of studying, a good idea to limit the use of it could be either to leave the phone in another room or to block it with the apps we have mentioned before (Forest app). If you don’t want to install any 3rd party applications you can just simply activate Airplane mode. As for your smartphone, you should also minimize any other distractions.
A tip we could give you to don’t procrastinate is to cultivate work-interest synergies in order to never lose motivation, this can be obtained by never losing interest in what you’re studying.
Finally, a way to trick your mind into producing more is to reward yourself after a study session, trust me, after all that hard work, it will be worth it!
How to study quickly and effectively
Surely the most important thing to study quickly and effectively is to have some keywords in order to don’t have to always read whole pages but simply keywords and maybe some sentences around them. In order to have keywords we suggest to do schemes, maps or underline them in your book, but it is even more important to listen in class to the lesson to be able to take good notes and consequently have key words not only from your book but also from the teacher’s lesson. On the other hand, if you’re not able to take good notes in class, once back home you could try to write better in a scheme what you wrote during the lesson in a messy way, another suggestion can also be to do another scheme with both the information you took during the lesson and all the information given you by the book.
Another good tip to do is to write nursery-rhymes or acronyms for the most important things to remember. Secondly, it’s very important to divide the study on all the available days you have in order to avoid studying everything only the days before the exam because the things to study are a lot so it would be nearly impossible to do. Finally, you should have a good place to study, possibly well-lit, silence and good order.
Avoid Anxiety time
1) Do not study the day of the exam, especially do not review at the last minute
2) Make sure to meditate and eat healthy foods on the special day
3) Go to the bathroom before the start of the exam
4) Talk to someone about the anxiety you have and make them calm you down
5) Do not use your phone and social media compulsively
6) Get a good night sleep
7) Don't talk about the exam before the exam
Keep Calm and Carry on
1) Be positive, develop a motivational self-talk
2) Read well the questions and understand what type of answer you must give
3) Pay attention only to the exam and do not get distracted by the surroundings
4) If you don't know how to answer a question, skip it and go to the next
5) Don't hesitate to ask for clarification
Why is a study pal/group important?
It gives you a better understanding of a subject, as everyone sees things from a different perspective and this may help you improve your critical thinking and analytical skills
Gives you responsibility as if you plan a collective review, you must be prepared for that date
It can help you cultivate team experience
It can help you feel more comfortable and chill with the study material
People can help you feel more motivated and can inspire you to do better and not procrastinate
