The first day at the Liceo Scientifico Statale "Cosimo de Giorgi"

Before the first class of the day, we were welcomed by our hostess and Erasmus+ coordinator at the Liceo, Daniela A. Rollo. She kindly gave us a brief tour of the school, introducing us to the school principal, Raffaele Capone, as well as to other colleagues making their way through the school corridors to begin their lessons.

At 9:15, with Professor Daniela A. Rollo and class 3A, we had our first pleasant moment of activity, where we were warmly welcomed by the students. 

The lesson began with a dramatisation by an enthusiastic and motivated 1A student, who performed an excerpt from Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, highlighting its mathematical aspects. 

 The 3A students then presented their work carried out using Artificial Intelligence in a creative way. Each student had selected daily life exhilarating events and had written short stories; then they had transformed them into ballads in the style of Anglo-Saxon Medieval ballads. 

With the help of the Suno application, they had created ballad songs. One of them accompanied the songs with the guitar. 

This activity was a huge success, the students enthusiastically performed their ballads, demonstrating commitment and motivation by singing and playing their songs. This activity contributed greatly to increasing their vocabulary in the English language but also enhanced their sentence construction and verbal expression skills, all while allowing them to explore AI tools effectively and creatively.

Next, we attended an English Literature class with Professor Maria Elena Miglietta and the students of 5D, where we observed the practical application of AI tools in literary analysis to increase students’ interest and participation.  

The students used AI (such as ChatGPT and other tools) to analyse Glory of Women based on pre-defined questions. In groups, they then created short dialogues between the two soldiers, refining their texts using AI assistance. Later, using the Character AI application, they brought their characters to life, scripting interactions between the two soldiers. Finally, using chat-based AI tools, they facilitated a dynamic conversation between their characters. This activity proved to be both engaging and effective, as students interactively explored new tools while critically reflecting on AI-generated responses.

The morning concluded with another brilliant performance by the students of class 3A with their teacher Monica Zuccaro, this time focusing on Mathematics. 

A large group of students showcased projects developed over the past months in the Mathematics Laboratory, demonstrating how Physics and Mathematics are taught/learned in Italy. Their work covered topics such as geometric sequences, series in area calculations, and the application of "special" fractal reactions. The students presented their findings in English with confidence and depth of knowledge and confidence, effectively communicating their understanding.

In the afternoon, we attended an Arduino training session for teachers, taken by Professor Danielle Pieroni where we had the opportunity to collaborate with colleagues on a hands-on project. 

The task involved constructing a model/robot equipped with multiple sensors and motors, designed to follow a line by distinguishing the contrast between black and white surfaces. Beyond the technical aspects, this session also allowed us to apply our collaborative problem-solving skills in a real-world setting.

In conclusion, the day was a highly enriching experience, both personally and professionally. It was filled with meaningful interactions, innovative learning experiences, and inspiring demonstrations of student creativity and engagement.

Job Shadowing al Liceo Scientifico "Cosimo de Giorgi"

Il primo giorno al Liceo Scientifico Statale "Cosimo de Giorgi" di Lecce.

Prima dell’inizio delle lezioni, siamo stati accolti dalla nostra ospite e coordinatrice Erasmus+ del Liceo, Daniela A. Rollo. Con grande gentilezza, ci ha fatto fare un breve tour della scuola, presentandoci il dirigente scolastico, Raffaele Capone, e altri colleghi che si dirigevano verso le loro aule per iniziare le lezioni.

Alle 9:15 con la Professoressa Daniela A. Rollo e la classe 3A abbiamo sperimentato il nostro primo piacevole momento di attività, venendo calorosamente accolti dagli studenti della classe. 

La lezione è iniziata con una drammatizzazione da parte di un entusiasta e motivato studente della 1A, il quale ha interpretato un estratto da Alice nel Paese delle Meraviglie di Lewis Carroll, evidenziandone gli aspetti matematici. 

Successivamente, gli studenti della 3A hanno presentato il loro lavoro realizzato con l'uso creativo dell’Intelligenza Artificiale. 

Ogni studente aveva  scelto eventi divertenti della vita quotidiana nel contesto scolastico, avevano scritto dei racconti e poi li avevano trasformati in ballate nello stile di quelle medievali anglosassoni. Con l’aiuto dell’applicazione Suno, avevano creato delle ballate, accompagnate anche dalla chitarra di uno studente della classe. 

Riteniamo che questa attività sia stata un grande successo; gli studenti si sono esibiti con entusiasmo, dimostrando impegno e motivazione nel performare le loro canzoni. A nostro avviso, questa esperienza ha contribuito notevolmente ad ampliare il loro vocabolario in inglese, migliorando la costruzione delle frasi e le capacità espressive, permettendo loro allo stesso tempo di esplorare gli strumenti dell’IA in modo efficace e creativo.

Successivamente, abbiamo partecipato a una lezione di Letteratura Inglese con la professoressa Maria Elena Miglietta e gli studenti della 5D, durante la quale abbiamo osservato l’applicazione pratica degli strumenti di IA nell’analisi letteraria per stimolare interesse e partecipazione degli student. 

Gli studenti hanno utilizzato l’IA (come ChatGPT e altri strumenti) per analizzare *Glory of Women* rispondendo a domande predefinite. Poi, in gruppi, hanno creato brevi dialoghi tra due soldati, perfezionando i loro testi con l’aiuto dell’IA. Successivamente, con l’applicazione Character AI, hanno dato vita ai personaggi, sceneggiando interazioni tra i due soldati. Infine, hanno utilizzato strumenti di chat basati sull’IA per creare  una conversazione dinamica tra i loro personaggi. 

Questa attività si è rivelata coinvolgente ed efficace, permettendo agli studenti di esplorare nuovi strumenti in modo interattivo, riflettendo criticamente sulle risposte generate dall’IA.

La mattinata si è conclusa con un’altra brillante esibizione degli studenti della 3A insieme alla loro docente Monica Zuccaro, questa volta incentrata sulla Matematica. 

Un folto gruppo di studenti ha presentato i progetti sviluppati nei mesi precedenti all’interno del Laboratorio di Matematica, mostrando come la Fisica e la Matematica vengono insegnate e apprese in Italia. 

I loro lavori hanno trattato argomenti come le successioni geometriche, le serie nei calcoli delle aree e l’applicazione di particolari reazioni frattali. Gli studenti hanno presentato in inglese  i loro risultati con sicurezza e competenza, comunicando efficacemente la loro comprensione.

Nel pomeriggio, abbiamo partecipato a una sessione di formazione su Arduino tenuta dalla professoressa Danielle Pieroni e dedicata agli insegnanti, durante la quale abbiamo avuto l’opportunità di collaborare con i colleghi su un progetto pratico. 

Il compito consisteva nel costruire un modello/robot dotato di sensori e motori multipli, progettato per seguire una linea distinguendo il contrasto tra superfici bianche e nere. 

Oltre agli aspetti tecnici, questa sessione ci ha permesso di applicare le nostre capacità di problem-solving collaborativo in un contesto reale.

In conclusione, la giornata è stata un’esperienza altamente arricchente, sia a livello personale che professionale. È stata caratterizzata da interazioni significative, esperienze di apprendimento innovative e dimostrazioni di attività e pratiche didattiche ispiratrici della creatività e dell’impegno degli studenti.

The last day at the Liceo Scientifico Statale “Cosimo De Giorgi” 

The last day at the Liceo Scientifico Statale “Cosimo De Giorgi” was spent with the fantastic teacher Joseph Weinman, where we were able to attend classes in the 1D and 2D classes, classes that are part of the Cambridge program and, for this reason, have lessons taught in English. The classes were very dynamic, interesting and with a lot of interaction between teacher and students, where the students learned in a fun and always friendly way. 

Overall, we can say that these were three fantastic days, in which the entire school community welcomed us very well; we were able to share experiences with other teachers, get to know a school reality that is very different from ours and observe how Italian students learn. 

It was a very enriching experience both personally and professionally, and we take the best memories of Lecce and the school community of the Liceo Scientifico Statale “Cosimo De Giorgi”

L'ultimo giorno al Liceo Scientifico Statale "Cosimo De Giorgi" è stato trascorso con il fantastico insegnante Joseph Weinman, dove abbiamo potuto frequentare le lezioni nelle classi 1D e 2D, classi che fanno parte del programma Cambridge e, per questo motivo, le lezioni sono tenute in inglese. Le lezioni sono state molto dinamiche, interessanti e con molta interazione tra insegnante e studenti, dove gli studenti imparavano in modo divertente e sempre amichevole. 

Nel complesso possiamo dire che sono stati tre giorni fantastici, in cui tutta la comunità scolastica ci ha accolto molto bene e dove abbiamo potuto condividere esperienze con altri insegnanti, conoscere una realtà scolastica molto diversa dalla nostra e osservare come imparano gli studenti italiani. 

É stata un'esperienza molto arricchente sia dal punto di vista personale che professionale, e portiamo con noi i ricordi più belli di Lecce e della comunità scolastica del Liceo Scientifico Statale "Cosimo De Giorgi".
