Social Studies

This week, we will be learning about New York State geography. We will be talking about why where we live matters, land forms that you can find in New York State, and lines of longitude and latitude.

We are continuing to learn about land forms that are found in New York State. We have explored our nation and are beginning to learn about how our states population formed the way that it has.

This week we were able to examine the five largest population cities in New York State. The students got to see the cities through Google Earth and we are discussing the land forms features that the cities have in common. We are also discussing how different types of land forms can impact where people decide to live.

This week we've been working on creating a tourism poster to convince people to go to a specific region in NY. The students are leveraging technology and some of them are creating Google slides to present. Once they are finished I will post them on the site and maybe they'll convince you to take them there!

We have completed our first Social Studies unit and have learned a lot about the communities we live in. Students have gained understanding about landforms and how they affect the people that live in those specific communities. Students also have a better understanding of maps, latitude and longitude and where they live.

We are working on our Native American unit evaluating how the early Iroquois used nature to meet their wants and needs and how they changed the environment to use those items.
