Celiac Disease
Celiac disease is an autoimmune digestive disease that affects 1 out of 133 people. Celiac disease is a poor response to gluten in food. Its usually found in wheat, barley, grains, and some oats. Exposure to gluten damages the lining of the small intestine. It takes away all the nutrients and this causes a person a lot of pain. Now, many people at restaurants have the option of getting meals without gluten because so many people have celiac disease.
The main symptoms are diarrhea and weight loss, but if people do not get treatment quickly, they can also have nutrient deficiencies. Other symptoms are gas and bloating, slow growth in children, headaches, loss of bone density, and also acid reflux.
It is said that most people with celiac disease have probably just inherited it from their parents. It can affect any age, and most people with European descent have celiac. When a person with celiac disease eats anything with gluten, their immune system targets their small intestine.
Its hard to get a diagnosis because the symptoms are so similar to other diseases. It can take a long time for doctors to give a person the celiac disease diagnosis. People usually get a blood test for antibodies to see if there is gluten in their system. They have to consume gluten before they take the test so that it is visible in the a test. If the test is positive, doctors will put a tube down the person’s throat and into their stomach into the small bowel, and take tissues from the small bowel to test.
The only treatment is a diet with no gluten at all. People with celiac disease that continue to eat things with gluten will keep having pain, slow growth, headaches, and developmental issues. If they don’t treat celiac at all, they can even develop small bowel cancer. The smallest amount of gluten can do a lot of damage to intestines and take a very long time to recover. There are now lots of breakfast foods without gluten that people can choose from, though.
