Mapmaker in EYFS, Year 2 and Year 6
At Lawford Primary School, Mapmaker has been used across different year groups to enrich a variety of topics.
Early years students used the tool to explore locations from a story, while Year 2 students used it to digitally plan a walking route before a school trip.
In Year 6, pupils used different map layers to compare two local towns. Teachers found that using iPads made the tool more accessible and easier to use for students.
Understanding the Impact of Mapmaker at Lawford
Mapmaker has significantly improved students' navigation and geographical understanding.
In a Year 6 lesson, a teacher challenged students to find two towns without using the search bar, which led to deeper discussions about geographical features like county borders.
The tool's ability to switch between base maps, such as imagery and street view, helps students compare data and analyse how features like train lines are shown differently.
The school also plans to use Mapmaker's live data for a Year 3 lesson on plate tectonics.
Advice for other teachers about Mapmaker
"I think everyone should switch to Mapmaker; It has so many different map types and layers, plus tools like the measuring feature.
It's accessible for all ages, significantly reducing the need for multiple resources, and giving children a fantastic opportunity to explore maps in new ways."
