Exning Primary School
Newmarket, Suffolk
Exning Primary School is a founder member of the East of England EdTech hub; supporting a range of schools locally and regionally.
Exning has developed a wide range of technology applications for everyday teaching and learning, with a particular focus on its inclusive approach to supporting all pupils.
Mapmaker in Year 4
Pupils at Exning used the Mapmaker platform to study biomes, tectonic plates, volcanic eruptions, and earthquakes by looking at live data. Teachers also used it for lessons studying global mountain ranges.
The ability to access this on their own devices, like Chromebooks, has made the children genuinely excited about maps, as it combines their digital skills with practical geography in a way that traditional, paper-based maps cannot.
Mapmaker Impact @ Exning Primary
Mapmaker has significantly impacted student learning by empowering children to explore and research independently. The tool's versatility across devices, including iPads and touchscreen Chromebooks, allows students to easily zoom, annotate, and screenshot maps.
This has not only enhanced geography lessons but has also extended to other subjects, such as English, where students used it for research.
The school is now integrating Mapmaker into its long-term plans to ensure it is used across various subjects.
Advice
The key is to let the children explore first.
When they are excited and engaged, you can then ask questions that will take their learning to a deeper level.
