The IHS Green Steps program is quite varied and covers many student activities. Please take a look!

Students' stadium pot planted in the fall of 2019. Students plant and care for two large pots of flowers at the visitors' canteen. This canteen area has been used by the SCHSL when Irmo hosted the state soccer finals in all brackets for boys and girls for the past several years.
Students plant seasonal flower pots at the stadium in the spring and the fall. They learn to care for them by applying proper fertilization and watering when needed.

Close view of one of the Morning Glories which seemed to be the students favorite flower!
Moon flowers were also planted in the garden. These bloom in late evening/night.
Our school was given a large box of a variety of seeds from Seven Oaks Plant Shop to share with other Green Steps Schools!
Students LOVED looking at the seeds, talking about them, and sorting by category for distribution to the other schools.
The seeds were sorted as flowers, vegetables, and herbs and given to all the schools in our district working in the Green Steps program who wanted them.
These strawberry plants (photo on 4-17-2020) were planted by students in spring 2019.
This is our spreading thyme in the garden. We are experimenting to see if roots will grow by placing a brick on certain runners. If so, we can remove that portion for replanting. We are rooting these in water as well.
These are amaryllis bulbs blooming that the students planted in the fall. In the background is rosemary they planted at the same time.

This encore azalea and 3 others were transplanted to an area along the sidewalk near our garden by a student interested in gardening. He comes to the Greenhouse area regularly during study hall and lunch to do gardening and work with seeds and plants.
This fern was donated to us because it was doing poorly. Our students transplanted it to a slightly larger pot and have been misting it frequently and watering as needed. The new growth is remarkable!
Pictured are 50 Kalanchoe plants in 4" pots generously donated to our Green Steps program by Seven Oaks Plant Shop. These are being cared for, the stems clipped and rooted to propagate more plants, and all to be repotted for teachers at a future time for the Plants in every Classroom project.

Irmo's Sting Deli is a "special kitchen" place where students learn math and reasoning skills while preparing wonderful food! The students serve lunches to teachers and staff every other Friday. Students take the orders, prepare the food, and deliver it. The menu is great and very reasonably priced! They also cater food for events at the school, the district office and the community.
Irmo's Sting Deli was invited and scheduled to donate colorful and festive finger foods for the City of Columbia's Earth Day Celebration on April 25, 2020 at the Columbia Museum of Art. This event had to be cancelled.
Students planted a dozen blueberry bushes in January 2019. Two students from The Center came with their tiller to till the ground for planting. Students had previously killed the weeds in this area with a non toxic treatment of 1 gallon white vinegar, 2 cups Epson salt and 1/4 cup Dawn dishwashing liquid. Dawn was used because it is stickier than most detergents helping to cling to the foliage. Care was taken not to soak the soil but to target the weeds.
This photo was on 4-17-20 and all bushes are loaded with blueberries. Plans are to harvest them for freezing and to be used at a later time in the STING DELI.
The STING DELI won the South Carolina DCDT Business of the Year Award in November 2019. Our Sting Deli students traveled to Greenville, SC with samples of their tasty food. Students made presentations about what they do and answered questions from the SC DCDT.
The SC Division on Career Development and Transition helps increase the participation of education in career development and transition goals. They help improve the quality of and access to such opportunities and offer support in many ways. They influence policies affecting career development for persons with disabilities.

This is a small portion of the "GETAWAY" inside garden near a faculty lounge. Our students plant pots and hanging baskets of seasonal colorful flowers to brighten and lift the spirits of anyone inside the garden and those passing through the halls!
This is the shadiest of the 3 inside gardens and has brick benches throughout. Students sometimes use this space as a classroom. This garden has a bird family living in it!
This third garden is near the media center and has a large dogwood tree near the center. Each of these three gardens can only be accessed by interior doors. There are glass windows around them so the gardens can also be seen by just walking by.
This array of flowers is student designed and cared for.
Here is another view of the media center garden.
Our media center garden has two sets of bistro tables and chairs for relaxing while taking a break or having lunch outside on a pretty day!
These students had just planted a pot of flowers featuring a "tractor seat" plant! This made us so HAPPY!
Irmo HS has had a community farmer's market on Tuesdays from 5-8 PM starting early summer through the end of October. Click on the WLTX Street Squad news article at the left to see all about it!
