HABITAT - Garden (sustain)
LEARN: Linda Byars (volunteer gardening teacher and mentor at IHS) explained the different parts of a flower and the purpose of each part.
DO: This student planted a flower in his biology classroom using the planting techniques he learned.
TEACH others: Ms. Robinson's biology classes created a bulletin board display in the science department hall for students to see while passing by. This identifies the plant parts and purposes. More work was planned to be done to this when school closed because of COVID-19.
SOIL: Composting outside (sustain)
Students LEARN about composting from IHS science teacher Christina Hampton.
Students DO composting in the garden area by turning the tumble barrel regularly and after each addition to the compost bin.
These students have added composting items to this wire compost bin which will be turned over with a pitch fork.
Students are collecting coffee grounds and eggs shells from the Sting Deli to be added to the compost bins.
TEACH others about the value of composting.
TEACH others: An amazing Journal was kept about the routine work the students did on this project.
Also an IHS Facebook post about our composting project was done on EARTH DAY April 22, 2020.
This large poster was made by the students to TEACH what can and what cannot be composted.
SOIL: Composting inside
This composting is done with worms inside and has been started. The IB science class is doing this project currently in distance learning. They made the worm bins at school and the plan was to teach the Special Ed students how to make worms bins. This project will continue next year.
