REUSE: UPCYCLED PLANTERS (sustain): Irmo students have upcycled planters and pots for years.
LEARN: Students were taught to do mod podge by IHS teacher Joyce Moran who was also the WLTX Teacher of the Week in early March 2020.
DO: Students busy doing mod podge updating on previously used plastic pots that had been washed by the students so the outside surface would accept glue (Feb 2020).
TEACH others: Students delivered their upcycled pots to teachers with a plant in them. Several pictures about this were posted on April 2, 2020 at IHS's Facebook, Twitter and Instagram sites.
REUSE: GREEN PURCHASING - STUDENTS GROWING AND SELLING ITEMS (sustain): This is somewhat of a tradition at Irmo and teachers/community come by to purchase items.
LEARN: Students learn the parts of a plant and how to successfully plant and care for them from Linda Byars (Irmo High School volunteer and mentor for gardening skills).
DO: Students plant Golden Pothos rooted in water for the plant sale.
DO: Students waiting for customers at the May 2019 Plant Sale. The 2020 Plant Sale was postposed because of COVID-19.
TEACH: A post about reuse on the IHS Facebook page on April 22, 2020 EARTH DAY.
REUSE: Upcycled planters (new)
Our students reused toilet paper and paper towel cardboard bases to make a large volume of these upcycled planting cups.
They made them whenever time was available after finishing other assigned work. This was a great productive time filler!
These cardboard planting cups were to be used to fill with planting soil for sowing seeds. After the seeds sprouted these little cups could be planted directly into the soil in the garden or pot. This would decrease the chances of damaging the tender plant roots while reusing a "throw away" item.
We were unable to utilize our stock this year but they can be used in the future.
ENERGY: Audit and Act - Dominion Energy Solar for Students program (new)
Peter Lauzon's IB Science class applied for a grant for the Dominion Energy Solar for Students program and received notification on January 30, 2020 that we had been selected! Dominion Energy wrote that Irmo's "application was complete, provided all the relevant information needed, and was highly rated by our reviewers."
On February 26, 2020 Dominion Energy's representative met with our district's facility personnel and Irmo instructors for a site visit and determined an appropriate location.
This project is now ON HOLD because of COVID-19.
REUSE: Recycling (sustain)
Irmo students DO recycling every week.
This is a typical weekly schedule.
This Reduce Reuse Recycle lesson is what the students used in their science class to learn about recycling.
The students printed a large poster telling what items should and should not be recycled
RECYCLE: Off-site Recycling (Partnered with Lexington County for this community event at Irmo High School)
REFUSE - REDUCE - REUSE - RECYCLE
LEARN: October 12, 2019 community wide recycling event check-in line at Irmo High School.
DO: IHS students emptying paper boxes for shredding at this event.
TEACH: Volunteer and students taking pictures of the event and all it involved.
