Hello! I am the Physical Education Teacher at Dutch Fork Elementary. This is my 4th year teaching full time at DFES. Before joining the Fox Cub Family, I was a traveling PE teacher in the district for 4 years. I moved to the Columbia area in 2017 after teaching in Charleston, SC for 3 years. A small town in upstate NY is where I grew up playing 3 sports; soccer, basketball, and softball. My husband, daughter, and our 2 dogs love to play outside and take walks.
This month in PE:
Our students across all grade levels have begun exploring the sport of tennis and practicing the skill of striking with a short-handled implement.
(Grades K-1) E.N.1.13: Strike a ball with a racket/paddle using a strike-bounce-strike pattern in selfspace.
(Grades 2-5) E.A.1.13: Strike with implement using mature form in modified game play across a net.
Our youngest students have been exploring what striking looks like by participating in a variety of centers such as balloon tennis, tennis bump ups, and even aiming for buckets as targets.
Our taller learners have jumped right into how to strike the ball properly to hit targets. Our focus has been on the force we use and striking with control. In week 1, we were able to get a lot of striking repetitions playing a game called “mission impossible” and they were striking tennis balls with their racquets to disarm parts of a bomb (hula hoops) to beat the timer. Next week, we will get into gameplay with 1v1 games!
Coming Up in PE: Speed Stacking and Gymnastics!
