5th Grade Band Program
In Lexington, all 5th graders will have an opportunity to learn a band instrument in school. Alternatively, students who studied a string instrument in the 4th grade can continue their string instrument in 5th grade.
Program Experience
Enrolled students will receive one 30 minute lesson per week.
Band students will learn basic woodwind/brass/percussion techniques, music literacy, and how to play as an ensemble.
String students will continue to advance their skills and learn additional repertoire.
Students will be provided practice assignments between classes.
Students will have the opportunity to participate in performances.
Students can elect to participate in All-Town Band and Orchestra. These extracurricular after school ensembles meet once per week and rehearse music that goes beyond the in-school curriculum. Registration for All-Town ensembles will take place in the fall.
This 5th grade program is the first step into Lexington’s band program, which extends all the way through Lexington High School.

Students who studied a string instrument in 4th grade are welcome to continue to play their string instrument in the 5th grade. However, they CANNOT study both a string and band instrument in school. If a student wishes to continue their string studies, please fill out the 5th Grade Registration Form. Additionally, for the 2021-2022 school year, string students will have the option of switching to the string bass.
How to get an instrument
Though families may attain an instrument in any way they wish, we highly recommend renting instruments through one of our approved vendors. Instruments should be acquired at the beginning of next school year in the fall.
