How does Lexington Public Schools define residency?
“‘Residence’ is a place where a person actually lives, and requires both intent to make the residence the student’s home and the student’s presence in that location. Temporary residence in the Town of Lexington solely for the purpose of attending the Lexington Public Schools is not considered ‘residence’ for admission to the Lexington Public Schools. In determining residency, the Lexington School Committee, through the Superintendent (or designee), reserves the right to require the production of a variety of records and documentation to determine whether or not a student actually resides in the Town of Lexington.” - Lexington School Committee Policy: JFAB
What is considered a “temporary residence”?
In according with school committee policy, temporary residence would include the following scenarios:
A student staying with friends/relatives who are not the child’s legal guardian, including renting a room or rooms in a home occupied by the homeowner
Temporary housing such as a hotel or a short-term rental, except those allowed by McKinney-Vento
How does the Lexington Public Schools verify residency?
New families or families re-enrolling to Lexington Public Schools must show proof of residency/occupancy by providing documents outlined on the Student Registration Requirement Checklist. Current Lexington families who are submitting a change of address must also show proof of residency/occupancy to their new Lexington residence by providing documents outlined on the Student Address Update Requirements Checklist. When physical residency is in question, LPS will make every attempt to work with families and may consult with the School Resource Officer, a member of the Lexington Police Department.

To register, you must close on your home and have occupancy of your home. Once you have closed on your home and have taken occupancy of your Lexington residence, you are then eligible to register a student for Lexington Public Schools.
