Diversity Book Blog

Welcome!

Welcome to the Fiske Elementary School Diversity Book Blog! This blog is part of our school's journey on creating an inclusive environment for ALL students and families.

In the 2018-2019 school year, through the generous support of the Lexington Education Foundation (LEF), we were able to purchase books for each student across the school. With the help from staff, such as our school librarian Amy-Jo Conant, we chose books that we felt would begin to highlight diverse characters that are not always represented in children's literature and would also reflect some of the students we have in our school.

Teachers began by reading each book aloud with students, and students following along in their own copies of the book. Thanks to Kate Jones, one of our Fiske reading specialists, teachers were provided talking points about each book. After reading the books in class, we then sent the books home with our students, along with a parent and family communication that also included talking points for the books.

We then held family "book clubs" where students and families could come in and talk about the books, characters, connections, etc. If you click on each picture below, you will get to see individual pages for each of the books that students read and some of the feedback and reactions to the books that were shared by students and families!
