November - December
Essential Questions:
How can wind and water change the land?
How do the properties of materials affect how they are used?
What can we do to keep the soil from washing away?
In this science unit, students will explore and collect evidence on the fast and slow ways water and wind can change the shape of the land. Students will examine photographs and models of certain changes in the land caused by flowing water and blowing wind. They will engage in a literacy activity that highlights the successful and unsuccessful ways people have attempted to minimize the impact that water and wind have on the land. Then they will use a stream table as a model to compare multiple solutions designed to prevent water from changing the shape of the land. At the end of the Unit, students will apply the evidence gathered in previous lessons and complete an engineering design challenge to come up with a solution to a scenario about preventing erosion.
