Students engage daily in a Reader's Workshop. This hour begins with a mini-lesson that includes teacher modeling and guided practice with mentor texts. The mini-lesson is followed by independent reading, partnership and small group work, and 1:1 work with the teacher. The workshop concludes with a wrap-up that might include partner sharing, review of content or skills taught, and student reflections.
The goal of this unit is to continue to help kids hold on to to information in longer texts and focuses on reading for MEANING. This unit teaches students to use strategies such as as stop and jots (post its) and conferring with a partner.
Students will:
* practice on fluency to help them read for meaning. To help them, they will pay attention to punctuation, dialogue tags, clues about characters to figure out the mood of the text. (Bend I)
* practice figuring out literary language by thinking. They will aske themselves, "What is happening in the text?" and "What does the author want me to understand?" (Bend II)
* practice holding on longer texts. They will us strategies to check in on their understanding so that they can connect all parts of the text. (Bend II)
The goal of this unit is to help kids hold on to more information as they transition into reading LONGER books at this point in the school year.
Students will be:
* practicing all the habits they've learned in Grades 1/2, e.g.,
- taking a sneak peek/orienting themselves before reading
- using a bookmark
- finishing one book before starting another book
- reflecting at the end of a book
- marking important parts of the book w/ post-its
* getting used to longer books by following characters and their problems (Bend I)
* rereading to make sure they're monitoring for meaning so they have a clear picture of the story and its characters (Bend II)
* thinking and talking about characters across ONE story and across DIFFERENT books (Bend III)
October Unit
This mini unit builds on strategies to solve tricky words. Students check for understanding and apply strategies learned in Grade 1 and Unit 1, trying them out for longer, multi-syllabic words.
September Unit
In this unit, students are building reading stamina. We have been practicing "tricky word strategies" like chunking words, looking at prefixes and suffixes, and thinking about vowel teams. We have started partner reading, as well as Reading Around the Room - where children can find a cozy spot to curl up with a good book.
