North End of Boston, MA
This series of photos was taken June 23-26, 2025, at the North End of Boston. During this duration, I also had the opportunity to travel to the South End, which includes works in this page. As I wandered around the public parks, shops, and rich Italian community, I observed subtle but meaningful interactions between people.
The black and white images are experimental, assigning a somber tone to a lighthearted picture. I also experiment with portraits and close-up shots, as well as shots from far away.
These photos capture sonder. Sonder is the realization that each passerby has a life as vivid and complex as your own, with their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. The theme of sonder is something new that I want to capture through photography.
Along with sonder, I seek to capture motion. In a photograph, it's hard to snap a moving object. However, I attempted to do just that with the girls on the swing that you will see throughout the cycle of pictures.
Lost In The Pages
Among the photos that I took at the North End of Boston, Lost In The Pages is my favorite by far. I, for one, love reading psychological horror. And these days, social media and technology play a huge role in our lives that books are almost a forgotten form of media.
I spotted this man immersed in his book, and I felt inspired to read more often as well. As much as I would love to read all day every day, school work catches up.
The lighting on the trees in the background gives the feeling of a portal somehow, working together with the darkness of the brick wall. It almost looks like a fairytale. The bench that this man is sitting on serves as leading line, directing the eye of the viewer towards the man. This photo, I think, has an alluring and ethereal nature to it that I can't explain.
PROCESS
After I took this photo (I unfortunately do not remember the model or lens of the camera, it was rented by the photography program I attended), I adjusted the lighting and arrangement in Lightroom Classic. I imported the improved photo into Adobe Photoshop, where I used a mask to make the corners of this photo darker. It emphasized the portal-like feeling I explained earlier.
South End of Boston, MA
This series of photos was taken June 23-26, 2025, at the South End of Boston. At the Amtrak and MBTA Commuter Rail, I captured the lives of strangers (with permission, either before or after I took the picture). Everyone at the train station has a different story; a student could be rushing against time to get to their train, a senior citizen could be enjoying the ambience at the station, and the stories are endless.
At the time, my mentor told me to capture unique stories in motion. Take the first picture, for example - this college student was just about to get off the chair as he noticed, on the giant screen that displayed train arrival times, that his train was waiting. Near the bottom of the photo, you can see that the feet have blurred.
Again, I experimented with black and white filters used in Lightroom Classic to communicate a different emotion for viewers to interpret.
