Every year, World Language students in Lexington County School District One will participate in an online language proficiency test called Standards-based Measurement of Proficiency or STAMP, provided by Avant Assessment. This online assessment gives our learners the opportunity to demonstrate what they know in the areas of reading, writing, listening and speaking in the target language.
We are excited about this opportunity to use the STAMP results to assess our World Language program, determine our instructional needs and inform us on specific professional development needs for our teachers. This proficiency assessment will not impact your child’s rating in class, as our ratings are based on multiple performances over time. These results will only provide another data point for consideration.
Students in immersion classrooms in grades 3–12, level 2 students in high school and all high school world language students applying for the 2021 Seal of Biliteracy in languages that are tested by STAMP will take part in this assessment. The dates your child is scheduled to take this assessment are determined at the school level.
PHMS usually administers the STAMP test after Spring Break.
Please note that the STAMP test does not use the same scores as Lexington County School District One for our unit performance assessments. Our district’s scoring practices are in-line with the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) Proficiency Guidelines. Often times, a student’s proficiency score on the STAMP test is not the same as their score on performance assessments we work on in class.
A proficiency score rates a language learner on their ability to communicate a wide variety of topics while a performance assessment rates a language learner based on a unit of study we have been working on in class.
