It is a way for students to demonstrate and be recognized for their proficiency in English and another language.
The Seal helps colleges and employers note that the student has a nationally recognized level of proficiency in two languages. Some colleges and universities allow students to skip basic level world language courses because of the Seal. Many employers are looking for bilingual employees and some even pay employees more for this skill.
Students are encouraged to study another world language throughout high school to maintain or improve their level of proficiency in the world language. Students may even want to start another world language in their junior year.
Students cannot qualify for the Seal until their junior or senior year of high school. Students must complete an application process during the fall of their junior and/or senior year and then take a computer-based proficiency assessment called the STAMP test.
There are three different levels of the Seal of Biliteracy. The Bronze Seal is awarded to students who demonstrate an Intermediate Mid proficiency level in all skills. The Silver Seal is awarded to students demonstrating an Intermediate High proficiency level and the Gold Seal is awarded to students demonstrating an Advanced Low or higher level of proficiency in all skills.
