Job shadowing gives you the opportunity to spend a day with a professional and learn what it’s like to work in a career you’re interested in.
All Lexington High School students may participate in one job shadow per semester (this includes any job shadowing experiences at LTC). Your approved job shadow will count as an excused absence for one school day.
Make sure you:
Have identified a career or occupation you want to explore.
Have identified a professional who may allow you to shadow.
Have considered transportation to and from the location.
Have selected a date that works for both you and the employer.
Understand that you must receive approval before completing the job shadow.

January 25th, 2027 through April 16th, 2027
Students are responsible for finding a professional who is willing to let you shadow them. Career Specialists can help you brainstorm career ideas and identify potential employers, but students are responsible for arranging their own job shadows.
Email Mr. Magyar (gmagyar@lexington1.net) to discuss your prospective job shadow location. You will then receive a permission form. Submit your completed form at least five school days before your job shadow.
Once you return your permission slip, Mr. Magyar will provide you with a job shadow packet. Your packet includes a student observation form and an employer evaluation form.
Spend the day learning about the career and workplace. Complete the student observation form, and have your employer complete the employer evaluation form.
After your job shadow, return your completed packet to Mr. Magyar within five school days. This is required in order to receive the excused absence.
Once Mr. Magyar reviews your completed packet, your absence will be submitted as an excused job shadow absence. Important: Your absence will NOT be excused unless you complete the required job shadow process and submit all required paperwork.
Students may complete one job shadowing experience per semester (this includes shadowing completed through Lexington Technology Center).
Yes. Your job shadowing experience should align with your career interests, career goals, pathway, or Individual Graduation Plan (IGP).
Students are encouraged to explore different workplaces and locations rather than repeatedly shadowing at the same organization. The goal of job shadowing is to expose you to a variety of careers and work environments.
Yes. We will consider a student's grades, attendance, and behavior when determining eligibility for job shadowing.
Students should refrain from shadowing a parent or guardian when possible. You are encouraged to explore opportunities outside of your immediate family to meet professionals and learn about different workplaces. Exceptions may be considered when the experience provides meaningful career exploration.
Shadowing at an elementary or middle school is generally limited to students who have a genuine interest in education or another school-based career. Shadowing is not intended as an opportunity to spend the day with a former teacher. Students interested in education as a career field are encouraged to shadow at a school they have not attended.
Job shadowing lets students actively explore a career. Students should observe the workplace, ask appropriate questions, and learn about the job responsibilities, required skills, education or training, and daily realities of the career. Students should complete their student observation form, and the employer should complete the employer evaluation form.
