Our AVID students have been working on learning the Focused Note Taking (FNT) Process. During this process students take notes, analyze them, process them, summarize them, and then use them for a future task. We have utilized learning a few games and made ice cream to demonstrate this process. Students take notes on the task early in the week. Completed steps 2-4. Then on Friday, put their notes to use to complete the task.
Our AVID 8 class this semester has been zooming with classes at Carolina Springs Elementary School and Red Bank Elementary School for Read with the Huskies! We have read to students in English and in Spanish!
The AVID classes hosted a fundraiser to raise money for Mental Health Awareness in the Midlands. Students and Staff were asked to bring in money to support this grade level challenge. Each chain link represents $0.10. This fundraiser brought in over $525 for this great cause! Thank you to everyone who participated. Congratulations to our 8th graders who was able to stretch their chain from the front of the hallway all the way to the end and win the challenge!

We sent out an email requesting information from colleges from across the United States. We wanted our students to see the wide variety of schools that are available. Over 250 colleges responded and sent items and information. Some of the information has been used to create bulletin board displays. Many of the swag items have been used for prizes for our Friday activities. We are so grateful for all the things that have been sent and continue to arrive at our school!
Have you ever tried to explain how to solve a puzzle to someone who can't see the pieces? Our AVID students sharpened their communication skills by helping their classmates solve a puzzle blindfolded. Each group took turns being the communicator and then puzzle solver. After they were able to reflect on the activity and their experience in it.
The AVID classes used one of our AVID skills to organize our thoughts and create our social contract. Each student wrote on post-it-notes valuable characteristics that we want to exhibit as an AVID Scholar and then organized the as a group to decide which one(s) were the most important to our group. From there, the social contract was created.
