Tutorials are a collaborative environment in which students use the inquiry process and Socratic dialogue to address Points of Confusion from their content classes in order to come to a more complete understanding of what they are learning.
Tutorials have been a core practice in AVID classrooms since the start of the AVID Elective class. As an English teacher, Mary Catherine Swanson understood that writing is a reflection of thought, and she asked the AVID students to take notes in each of their classes. These notes were a window into what the students understood. Swanson knew that she could help her students with questions in English or history classes, but she did not have the expertise to advise them in science or math classes. Therefore, she decided, with the approval of her administration, to hire former students currently attending universities who were strong in science and math to work with AVID students in those areas. AVID students were being held accountable for their coursework, and their notes gave the tutors and Swanson insight into what was occurring in their classes so the students could receive the needed support to excel.
We are fortunate this year to have four college tutors from local colleges to assist with this process. Currently our AVID 8 students are involved in the process and bring two tutorial request each week to use in the tutorial process. Our AVID 7 students will be beginning this process soon.
Level One Questions can be answered by facts contained in the document or text or by information accessible in other resources; generally short answers.
Level Two Questions have answers that are implied by the text; requiring analysis and interpretation of specific parts of the document or text being examined
Level Three Questions are much more open-ended and go beyond the document or text being examined. They are intended to provide a discussion of an abstract idea or issue.
Aiden is an 8th grade CSMS student. She works hard in her classes and exemplifies the traits of an AVID student in her classes. Aiden is one of our Spanish Immersion students. One of her favorite classes is Algebra 1. Here is what Aiden's teachers said about her. Mrs. Yarborough said, Aiden is a great student! She is funny, kind, hard working, and always willing to help her classmates. Her love of reading makes me especially happy!
I enjoy having Aiden in my class and am excited to see how she grows throughout the year." Mrs. Torres stated, "She is one of the best students in Spanish 3 Immersion Class. She is a hard worker and always goes the extra mile in foreign language practices." Mrs. Deal commented, "Aiden is always kind to everyone she encounters. She continuously turns in high quality work. Never backs away from a challenge and is always there to help when asked. We have been reading to the Elementary classes and has used her Spanish speaking abilities to read to a 5K Immersion classroom. It is an absolute joy to have Aiden as a part of the AVID class!" Aiden is a wonderful young lady who has a bright future ahead of her. She enjoys drawing, painting, practicing gymnastics, and hanging out with her family. She also spends time focusing on her school work, completing her homework, and preparing for the next day/week by studying or rewriting her notes to stay organized. Aiden plans to go to college in the future and is thinking about graduating high school early to pursue a career in the medical field. She is considering the University of Georgia for post-secondary studies and would like to be on the gymnastics team at UGA.
Keri is a 7th grade AVID student at CSMS. She participates in cheerleading as an extracurricular activity. She loves to read and write in her spare time. This is what Keri's other teachers had to say about her. Mr Borowiec said, "Keri is one of the most enthusiastic studies I have ever had the pleasure of teaching! Her positive attitude sets the tone for first period everyday whether she is leading the class in "Good Things" or contributing to class discussions. Her hard work and desire to learn always results in high academic performance!!" Mrs. Carter stated, "Keri is an independent thinker. She’ll never take anything on face value, but instead uses her logic and critical thinking to come to a conclusion on her own. She is an incredibly knowledgeable student. Her ability to focus, support others, and perform under pressure puts her in the category of an overachiever. I wouldn’t want it any other way! If I set her a task, she goes about not only completing it, but doing the extra research to make sure she impresses me with her knowledge! Perhaps one day I will see Keri on the set of Jeopardy and be proud to know I was a part of her learning story. " Mrs. Dunn commented, "I love teaching Keri Science, she is a hard working student. Keri logged on for virtual learning every single day and did her absolute best to keep up with her work. She works hard on the field as a CSMS cheerleader and represents our school with great pride. Keri has excellent communication skills and a great personality. She is a pleasure to have in class. " Mrs. Wood, "Kerri is a pleasure to teach. Her cheerful and positive personality is a breath of fresh air. She enjoys learning and will ask questions to make sure she understands. She strives to always do her best. Kerri is a great representative for AVID." Mrs. Cagle said, "Keri is always so positive and bubbly. She always has something good to share with the class as well. The other students feed off of her and her positivity. She is a very bright and motivated student. She is a great example of what a student athlete and AVID student should be." Keri plans to study mechanical engineering and would like to attend either Louisiana State University (LSU) or Southern University (SU).
Ms. Richard was recently caught having her students create one-pagers related to different layers of the earth's atmosphere and then collaborating to put the layers of the earth together into a larger visual representation! Students then had to reflect on what they learned to help solidify their learning!
When she's not implementing multiple AVID strategies, Ms. Richard enjoys crafting and all things "Nightmare Before Christmas" related! She is a graduate of Winthrop University and a valuable member of our Husky team!
