Relational capacity is the degree of trust and level of safety among members of a group. In an educational context, this specifically refers to the established level of trust and safety between teachers and students, as well as directly between students. Classes that are low in relational capacity are often teacher-centered, with little dialogue or collaboration among students. Alternatively, classes that are high in relational capacity are characterized by energy and comfort, where students feel mutual ownership in the expectations and learning within the classroom.
Using these resources, we will be able to:
Develop authentic relationships within our class that are founded on trust and care.
Recognize the diversity of each other and what they bring to the classroom.
Engage in motivational, high-energy activities that promote a sense of community.
Create an environment that establishes a safe learning community.
Collaboration centers on the effective sharing of information amongst individuals. In an educational context, collaboration affords students the opportunity to work with peers in various group configurations as they engage with subject matter across content areas. Collaboration is essential for student success as it entails experiencing the challenges and opportunities associated with a diversity of perspectives and working styles, which can deepen metacognitive thinking, accelerate learning, and broaden perspective. Utilizing collaborative structures to provide students with the opportunity to work with different peers—from diverse backgrounds and with varying experiences—strengthens not only the class community, but enriches the learning experience for every student involved.
Zoey Standridge is a 8th grade AVID Scholar at CSMS. Her favorite subject is English because she likes to explain herself and learn about others. Her teachers enjoy her energy and excitement in class.
Mrs. Yarborough said, "Zoey is an excellent choice! Zoey is always ready for class. She always comes in with a positive attitude and a smile. She is very helpful to those around her. Her personality is contagious and she is such a great student!"
Mrs. Valdez commented, "Zoey is a beautiful person always in a great mood, willing to uplift everyone around her, always seeing the bright side of people. She is an amazing -entregada- person, giving, generous, kind, loving, smart, and so much more. I am honored to have her in my class, and to call her my student."
Mrs. Poole said, "Zoey is very energetic in the classroom. She answers questions in class and is always willing to help other students who are struggling. Her work is detailed, correct, and on time. Often, Zoey will ask follow up questions that show she has given careful thought to the content presented. I enjoy teaching such an enthusiastic student."
Mrs. Stuler stated, "Zoey is a fantastic student. She is friendly, caring, and a hard worker. She comes into everything with a great attitude, and always puts forth her best effort. If something isn't going right, Zoe works hard until she can figure out how to correct it. Zoe sets a great example for her peers as well.
Upon graduation, she plans to attend the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) or Furman University to major in Education. She would like to become a teacher and teach what she loves...something in the performing arts! Her free time is limited because of her involvement in the White Knoll High School Color Guard (JV Team) and various roles in the theatre however she enjoys those activities so she does not mind.
