CO' stands for corona, 'VI' for the virus, and 'D' for disease. Formerly, this disease was referred to as '2019 novel coronavirus' or '2019-nCoV.' The COVID-19 virus is a new virus linked to the same family of viruses as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and some types of the common cold.
On December 31, 2019, it was informed of cases of pneumonia of unknown cause in Wuhan City, China. A novel coronavirus was identified as the cause by Chinese authorities on January 7, 2020 and was temporarily named β2019-nCoVβ.
The most common signs and symptoms of COVID-19 are fever, cough, and trouble breathing. Fatigue, muscle pain, chills, headache, sore throat, runny nose, nausea or vomiting, diarrhea, and a loss of taste or smell may also occur.
Thought to spread from person to person through droplets released when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks.
An asymptomatic case is someone who has a positive laboratory test but has no symptoms for the duration of the infection.
Pre-symptomatic carriers, wonβt develop them later. This doesnβt mean a person who is asymptomatic is in the clear, as studies now show the virus can cause mild harm to the lungs when in this stage. Experts say it is also unknown at this time if asymptomatic carriers will remain symptom-free the entire time of infection.
