SATURDAY, October 23, 2021 - The UPLB Com Arts Society organized a roundtable discussion entitled, “HELPDESK XVI: Defining Shapes”, that focuses on how the pandemic reshaped, recalibrated, and redefined different spaces in everyone's lives.
The Event Head, Ms. Soleil Amandi, welcomed all those who joined in their event’s roundtable discussion. It was then followed by the introduction of the first speaker led by Ms. Maya Estoso.
The first speaker was Ms. Alyssa Pamela Silvano, a BA Communication Arts 2018 and UPLB Com Arts Society Alumna.
In her discussion entitled, “When Bubbles Collide,” she started by asking participants about bubbles. She then stated that: “We, humans, have our own Bearing Bubbles.”
Furthermore, she discussed the difference between the “Home Bubble” and the “Work/School Bubble”. The “Home Bubble” is for individuals to rest, while the "Work/school Bubble" pushes the people to learn now that they are living in a bigger bubble, which is the Pandemic Bubble.
She explained the "Pandemic Bubble" as one which affected every persons’ life. It was a bubble full of confusion, anxiety, regrets, and much more — even Ms. Silvano stated that she experienced all of that. “After working from home, learning from home...for almost two years, we were able to find our work-life balance,” she remarked.
Afterwards, she discussed the impact of the pandemic on four aspects: physical space, routine, productivity, and communication.
She also discussed and reminded the participants of a few things that could help them with the recent events. She stated that people should learn to own their time and that being comfortable should be considered. She then said that we need to prioritize ourselves.
“Kasi unang-una sa lahat, walang gagawa ng bagay na kailangan mo gawin kung wala ka, kung hindi okay. With that mas maraming backlog,” she embarked.
As Ms. Silvano ended her lecture, the participants were given a chance to ask her questions for the Question and Answer portion.
Continuing the event, the second speaker, Ms. Mia Ruth L. Barroga, a graduate from Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila with a degree of Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in English, was introduced.
She started off her lecture by presenting a series of answers from different people’s perspectives concerning her topic entitled, “Importance of School as a Space for Learning” and explained the objectives of her discussion.
Ms. Barroga explained a quote from Prakash Nair, President and Founding Partner of Fielding Nair Architects: “Schools are one building type that we are all familiar with because we’ve all been in school. So we have this mental image of what a school building is supposed to look like.”
According to her, it is hard to navigate and shift everything because people are not accustomed to their homes being a learning area.
Moreover, she asked the participants what they missed about Face-to-Face classes and explained the three different main aspects: Mental, Social, and Physical.
After Ms. Barroga’s discussion, a five-minute break was given to participants before the roundtable discussion.
Thereafter, three distinguished individuals were introduced by the host: Mr. Siegfred Severino, a BS Chemical Engineering of UP Diliman, Mr. Jonas Angelo Abedilla, a Chairperson of Student Council in UP, and Engr. Alvin Joseph Dolores and followed by the start of the roundtable discussion joined together byr the reactors and the event’s speakers.
The webinar concluded as the host presented and awarded the Certificate of Appreciation to the speakers as well as to the reactors. The participants were then given a chance for a photo opportunity with them.
