Press Archives: The Marcoses leaves the Malacañang Palace
On this day, just about 9 p.m., Former President Ferdinand E. Marcos and his family departed the presidential palace under demands to resign from all sides and flew to Clark Air Base in a helicopter.
As soon as the word of Mr. Marcos' departure spread, the capital's celebrations erupted as hundreds of thousands of Filipinos poured out into the streets, blaring horns, lighting fireworks, and torching tires.
Fighting broke out between Marcos loyalists and detractors as throngs gathered outside the presidential palace. A rowdy mob eventually barged into the palace, tearing down pictures of Former President Marcos and his wife, and helped themselves to trinkets.
