MONDAY, September 20, 2021 - Still part of the opening of the STEM Week, the Letran Manila Senior High School conducted its second session of webinar entitled, "Integration of Classroom Technology using Casio Classwiz" via Google Meet and Facebook Live, participated by Grade 11 STEM students and Faculty Members.
The said event kicked-off with the Quadricentennial prayer and the Mission and Vision of the Colegio. Right after, the Opening Remarks was delivered by Ms. Monique Molina, STEM Learning Area Coordinator.
Following, Ms. Mylene Masangya, a faculty of the STEM department, introduced the resource speaker, Ms. Alyssa Dee Villena, a Senior High School Math teacher at Tinajeros National High School a graduate from UP Diliman.
Her lecture entitled, "Technology Empowered Activities for Mathematics”, solely for Junior and Senior High School, intended to educate about the amazing advanced features of the new Casio Classwiz. According to her, the activities they prepared are for students to "learn and have fun".
Furthermore, she started off with an interactive activity with the students where they can send their answers through the chat box with the use of emojis. The answers were revealed as Ms. Alyssa Villena, joined by Ms. Regine Mae Esquilla, solved the problems with the use of the digital Casio Calculator, a manual scientific calculator.
"The use of the Casio Calculator saves a lot of time for students during their tests than manually solving," stated Ms. Esquilla, recommending the scientific calculator for its efficiency and user-friendliness.
Proceeding forward, Ms. Esquilla shared a Google Slides link that she made accessible to the students. The participants were instructed to order and pair the given logarithmic values in a span of 3 minutes. Like in the previous activity, with the use of the Casio Calculator, the needed values were found with its advanced features.
Next, Ms. Alyssa Villena gave a real-life situation, much alike a murder mystery where the students would be detectives, applying math to catch the suspect. As usual, she solved the problem with the students using the Casio Calculator which really helped with the convenient and fast solving of the mystery.
Through the use of the website named "WordWall'', another activity engaged students' cooperativity as they input their answers with the responding given equations regarding the topic, Trigonometry. With the use of the same calculator, they discussed the shortcuts and techniques to get all the missing values.
The next activity is called Bingo, but with the application of Mathematics. The mathematical application would be “limits”, and with the use of the Casio Calculator, the functions given as examples were solved easily without the need to write in a paper about its lengthy manual calculation. The answers would be considered as the "rolled" numbers in playing Bingo marked in the cards presented to students as they chose their own card.
To cool down with the enormous activities that implied learnings and Math applications to students, a crossword puzzle was answered by the students through the chat box as Ms. Esquilla presented questions related to Mathematics, specifically in regards to business mathematics.
To conclude, the certificates of recognition were given to the speakers and closing remarks was led by Ms. Roanne De Guzman to formally acknowledge the end of the Opening of the STEM Week.
STEM week will run until Friday, September 24 with series of webinars focusing on STEM Education in the Now Normal (in collaboration with the Work Immersion Coordinator) on the 23rd and discussion on COVID19: Issues and Updates (in collaboration with the Community Extension Department) on the 24th.
