Letran-SHS STEM Area led discussion on STEM Education in the New Normal

THURSDAY, September 23, 2021 - Still in celebration of the STEM Week 2021, the Grade 12 STEM students attended a webinar entitled, "STEM Education in the New Normal" via Google Meet and Facebook Live.
The master of ceremony, Mr. Timothy Estañol from STEM12-C, started a 'Kumustahan Session' and briefly introduced the webinar's discussion.
Afterwards, Ms. Patricia Angelli Valderrama, the Work Immersion Coordinator, gave her opening remarks. She thanked Mr. Awi- the SHS Principal, the resource speaker, and the participants. She also reminded the students to take down notes. "Make sure to take down notes and apply whatever you will be learning from today...Siempre Arriba, Siempre Letran," she remarked.
Following, Mr. Stephen Capilitan, MST, DSCED Biology, and the Founder of Citizenship Plus Philippines was introduced as today's speaker by Mr. Estañol.
To formally begin his discussion, the speaker presented a series of pictures related to Science. Then he briefly introduced himself to everyone in the meeting.He addressed the Natural Ecosystem's Disturbance. He stated that through social media platforms, everyone could help other people by informing them and making them aware. Furthermore, he said redefining STEM Education is quite challenging. Thus, everyone needs to build a community.
Moreover, he also discussed Citizenship Science. He stated that "We could be Scientists in our community”. He also provided students with different tools and platforms that could be useful for them. Subsequently, he then discussed Pedagogy and Andragogy. He mentioned that everyone needs to immerse themselves in authentic projects. "We need scientists that are able to be found in our country," he uttered.
To end his lecture, he leaves a question to the students, "Do you want to be a modern hero for our STEM Education?"
Right after, the students are given a chance to ask Mr. Capilitan on the Q&A portion.
As the webinar close to its end, Ms. Monique Molina, the STEM Learning Area Coordinator, led the awarding of the Certification of Appreciation to the resource speaker. She then gave the closing remarks and acknowledged the participants in the said webinar and everyone was asked to turn on their cameras for the photo opportunity, followed by the community singing of Himno del Colegio.
