Letran-SHS STEM Area and Community Extension Department hold discussion on COVID-19 Vaccination: Issues and Updates

FRIDAY, September 24, 2021 - To conclude the celebration of the STEM Week 2021, the Letran Senior High School in collaboration with Community Extension Department, launched a webinar entitled, “COVID-19 Vaccination: Issues and Updates”, which was held via Google Meet and Facebook Live attended by Grade 11 STEM students.
This webinar aims to update the community regarding the ongoing fight against COVID-19 and to provide the entire everyone with the most up-to-date information, especially regarding vaccines.
The said webinar started off with a Quadricentennial Prayer and the reciting of the Colegio’s Vision and Mission. It was then followed by the introductory opening of Ms. Audrey Joyce Marcelo, the SHS Community Extension Coordinator, where she briefly introduced the focus of the event.
“I am very confident that you will gain new ideas, and fresh learnings from our speakers. Especially when it comes to the misconceptions about vaccines. Thank you, stay healthy, Arriba!” Ms. Marcelo exclaimed whilst ending her opening remarks.
Thereafter, Mr. John Romy Delfin, the event host, introduced the guest speaker, Dr. Patricia Anne S. Atal, a graduate medicine student from UST, and is currently pursuing her 2nd year of residency in Internal Medicine at Highland Hospital at Oakland, California.
“We will know more about the vaccines. What it does for our health, and the reason why we need to be vaccinated,” Dr. Patricia said, opening the discussion towards her lecture.
She opened the discussion by describing how the pandemic has changed everybody’s lives in so many aspects, and on how many people were anxious and got scared. Hence, the impact of COVID-19 virus to the public as it greatly affected their way of living and many are still adjusting to the new normal.
Continuing the topic, she introduced the human immunity system and the two types of immunization process which are: Innate Immunity and Adaptive Immunity. It was followed by the presentation of the history of how vaccines were invented and how they were revolutionized and improved upon until they became the current vaccines that we have today.
She also mentioned the ten vaccines that have been approved in the Philippines and all of the vaccines that our country’s currently using ever since the start of distribution of vaccination.
Moreover, she stated that vaccines which have been approved by different health organizations must contain a green mark in her presentation.
As the discussion went on, she explained the difference between mRNA vaccines and the Adenovirus vaccines. Its advantages and disadvantages were also tackled. The potential issues of the vaccine, one that most people anticipated was thoroughly expounded.
Dr. Patricia adamantly imparted the effects of the said mRNA and Adenovirus vaccines in the human body. She also deliberately answered the question, “What is the best vaccine?” to which she replied, “The best vaccine is the one offered to you by professionals”.
As her lecture reached near its end, Dr. Patricia entertained some questions from the participants during the Q&A portion.“Being vaccinated doesn’t mean that microchips are being transferred inside your body. It’s certainly false,” she stated, answering the question about misconceptions regarding vaccines which she said frustrates her the most. Dr. Patricia also added that she was confused as she had no idea where that misconception came from.
To formally conclude the said webinar, Ms. Monique Molina, the STEM Learning Area Coordinator gave her closing remarks and accorded the certification of appreciation to Dr. Patricia.
