FRIDAY, December 3, 2021 - JourKNOW!, a journalism workshop series brought by The Bedan Roars, embarked on their third installment focusing on the principles of News Writing, aired via Facebook Live and Zoom Conference from 5 PM to 6:20 PM.
The program hosts, Mr. Matthew Cabural and Mr. Yuri Morrison gave a quick introduction of what the attendees could expect from the discussions and presented some reminders that participants should observe whilst the webinar. After that, to warm up everyone’s mind before the discussion, the emcees held a quick virtual game and later on introduced Mr. Luis Lucas to deliver his opening remarks.
Thereafter, the masters of ceremony warmly welcomed Mr. Joemar Lazaro Furigay, a Master Teacher II. He’s also the coordinator of the English Department and the school paper adviser of the award-winning official English Student publication LCPNSHS, The Standard Press.
Mr. Joemar started his discussion by giving a detailed preview of what he would be discussing for the duration of the event. He proceeded to explain the different details and news values that journalists should focus on, adding that they shouldn’t be hasty and ignorant, especially when crafting a news article.
He then elucidated the factors that attract journalists to write an article and why these factors are the foundations of creating a great news article. “Getting the ‘angle’ right is a matter of judgment or news sense,” Mr. Joemar highlighted, as he mentioned the importance of different view angles of a news article and what they should take based on their principles as journalists. Moreover, he presented the different types of news, how they are written, their purpose, and their examples.
As his discourse ended, the emcees then started to pick out some of the frequently asked questions that Mr. Joemar proceeded to answer one by one. It was then followed by the closing remarks of Mr. Nikko Endiafe, as he shared his insights on the workshop and expressed his gratitude towards the attendees and to Mr. Joemar Furigay as well. With that, the second to the last day of JourKNOW successfully reached its end.
