“Life can be heavy, especially if you try to carry it all at once. Decide what is yours to hold and let the rest go. Oftentimes the good things in your life are lighter anyway, so there’s more room for them. One toxic relationship can outweigh so many wonderful, simple joys. You get to pick what your life has time and room for. Be discerning.” This has been one of the many things that Taylor Swift has said in her speech as she received her Honoris Causa Doctor in Fine Arts at New York University on May 18, 2022.
Aside from being an award-winning artist and producer, Taylor Swift also has one thing that makes her remarkable, and that is her being an inspiration to her fans, especially the youth.
Taylor is known for her various songs that capture the people’s heart around the globe, and some of these songs are Lover, Cruel Summer, Back To December, Love Story, You Belong With Me, and All Too Well. Her fans, known as "Swifties," are inspired by her music and with some of the most promising singers of our time, namely Conan Gray and Olivia Rodrigo. In an October 2020 interview with People, Conan Gray stated that Taylor Swift inspired everything he knows about pop music and songwriting. The “Heather” singer also mentioned that Swift “knows how to tell a story, and anybody who listens to her knows that she is great at storytelling.” In addition, the “deja vu” singer, Olivia Rodrigo stated in May 2021 that Taylor is her inspiration because she has been listening to her songs since she was five years old. “I think she’s the best songwriter of all time, but she’s so business-savvy and she really cares about her career and in that regard too-that’s been really inspiring for me to watch somebody take control of their career and their life like that,” Olivia added in her statement on NME.
As the 11-time Grammy winner continues to write songs, there is also one thing for sure: she is an exceptional role model for the younger generation who keep on looking up to her. The youth continue to give their all in everything they do, despite the fact that they must overcome numerous obstacles to achieve their goals because they see themselves in the singer's personality. Like them, Taylor also went through many rejections and trials before she reached where she is right now.
So to the young ones, please continue to do things that make you happy because it will make you succeed as time passes. It may be tiring and difficult right now, but remember what Taylor Swift has said during her commencement speech at NYU, “We are led by our gut instincts, our intuition, our desires, fears, our scars, and our dreams. And you will screw it up sometimes. So will I. Hard things will happen to us. We will recover. We will learn from it. We will grow more resilient because of it.”
