Labor leader Leodegario Quintain de Guzman, also known as Ka Leody de Guzman, is running for presidency in this year’s election representing Partido Lakas ng Masa (PLM) political party. He is known as a labor activist who defends workers’ rights in the Philippines. Ka Leody studied Bachelor of Science in Customs Administration at Philippine Maritime Institute College (PMI). Two days after graduating, he began to work as a garment worker in Aris, Philippines, for thirteen years.
De Guzman is the chairperson of Bukluran ng Manggagawang Pilipino which is a labor center in the country and the founding leader of Partido ng Manggagawa. De Guzman also became the country representative of the International Council of the International Center for Labor Solidarity in 2012 and the Vice President of Asia Regional Organization of Bank, Insurance and Finance Union since 2008.
Ka Leody also ran in the last Senatorial elections in 2019 but lost and placed 38th. Last October 2021, he decided to file his candidacy for the presidency because he wanted to change the government system. Before campaigning, his main advocacies address anti-contractualization, which abolishes intermediaries and third-party firms that causes a burden to Filipino workers. Eradicate rice tariffication law, rate hikes in utilities, call for more strict control and regulation in the oil industry. He also wants to abolish the NTF-ELCAC, particularly removing of the Anti-Terrorism Law of 2020.
The aspiring president answers questions asked in Jessica Soho’s Presidential Interview through his Facebook Live since he is not invited to the said interview. He became the talk of the town after the SMNI Debate last February 15, 2022, since he is one of the four candidates who accepted the invitation and left a remark on the viewers.
