May 4, 2023 (Thursday) - On a Thursday afternoon on May 4, 2023, Colegio de San Juan de Letran-Manila Senior High School's Danza en Ritmo Performing Group brought their audience to a world of visual storytelling and powerful symbolism in their concert entitled, "PINASAYAW: Indak Tungo sa Makabayang Pagbabago!" Each performance covered a range of relevant and contemporary issues in the nation, showcasing the group's versatility and finesse.
The event started with an awarding ceremony where deserving individuals of the organization were recognized, including Mr. Martin Agliam for the best choreographer, Ms. Hannah Lizette Daiz for the most active member, and Ms. Maria Yllysa Crespo for the moderator's choice award, setting the tone for an evening of excellence and artistry. Furthermore, Ms. Chrystyn Cruzpero’s exceptional dance cover of Kaia’s “Kaya” and Mr. Martin Agliam’s outstanding dance cover of Blackpink’s “Pink Venom” garnered the most views in their respective categories, highlighting the group's creativity and popularity.
Throughout the concert, the group showcased their talents and tackled relevant societal issues, reflecting the hearts of the Filipino spirit. Each performance was imbued with its distinct symbolism, representing different facets of Philippine society. For instance, the Badjao dance "Janggay," with performers' long and sharp nails, represents strength and resilience. Additionally, the Danza en Ritmo Performing Group performed "Sala ti Mais," a rural occupational dance from Isabela province is observed to celebrate the abundant harvest of corn since corn is their main crop. Meanwhile, the interpretative dance for mother nature, accompanied by the song "Anak ng Pasig" by Geneva Cruz, depicted the Earth's struggles with climate change and the need for immediate action.
One highlight of the most powerful performances was the interpretative dance regarding mental health, which highlighted the stigma surrounding this often-neglected issue. The dancers' movements captured the emotional struggles of individuals with mental health issues, emphasizing the importance of mental health awareness and advocacy.
Moreover, their unwavering commitment to using dance as a means of social commentary and advocacy was evident in their powerful portrayal of the issues of corruption and political dynasties that afflict the poor. Their graceful movements and captivating choreography illuminated the urgent need for political reform and social justice in the Philippines. The performance was a work of art and a call for prompt action, a reminder that the fight for a better future for all Filipinos is far from over. The symbolism and imagery used in the dance brought to life the struggles of the marginalized and emphasized the importance of having leaders who genuinely serve the people. It was a poignant and stirring performance that left a lasting impact on the audience.
Another standout performance was the energetic and dazzling dance advocating for LGBTQIA+ rights. Together with their club moderator Mr. Rolliezon Tagaytay, the group powerfully portrayed a journey towards self-acceptance and liberation, a statement of support and solidarity for the marginalized community with the songs "Super Sireyna," "Amakabogera," and "Sirena."
As the concert drew close, the entire Danza en Ritmo members occupied the SC Auditorium for their last performance. Their synchronized movements symbolized unity and strength as they danced through "Noypi'' by Bamboo. Just when the audience thought the night couldn't get any better, before Lady Gaga's song "Bad Romance" ended on their last segment entitled "Dance in the Dark," Mr. Martin Agliam stepped forward. He began to vogue and then delivered his breathtaking dip. His sharp and precise movements were a testament to the perseverance and creativity of the Danza en Ritmo, and the audience was left in awe as he danced with unbridled passion and confidence.
Overall, the Danza en Ritmo concert was a beautiful display of the power of art to raise awareness and create change. The different performances were a testament to the group's dedication to using their talent and skills to shed light on important issues affecting Filipino society. Each dance served as an invitation to reflect and take action toward a better, more inclusive, and progressive nation. Through their art, Danza en Ritmo has proven that dance is not just entertainment but a tool to promote social change and inspire hope.
