Moon

On November 8th, 2022- midterm elections started pouring in, but those weren’t the only headlines. In the early morning hours of 5:00, the moon took on a completely different light - a bloody one.
Our moon has an overwhelming amount of lighting, but there are some special ones. These lightings are called lunar eclipses. There are different kinds of lunar eclipses, the penumbral, partial, and total. The penumbral lunar eclipse takes place when the moon falls into a slight shadow of the earth, blocking the sun and making the moon a pale white color-like milk. The partial lunar eclipse happens when the moon is blocked by the earth from the sun at a 45 degree angle, half of it in the direct shadow, and the other half in the weaker shadow, giving one half the milky complexion, and the other a stark black making it match the space around it . Finally the total lunar eclipse happens when the earth completely blocks the sun's view of the moon, it will then turn a crimson red!
That is what happened on November 8th 2022, a blood red moon crossed through the sky in front of the United States of America from the hours 5:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. This was special because it is the last predicted full lunar eclipse until 2025. This is a rare, wondrous, and beautiful thing that I would pay all my money to see again. Now, I hope that you can see it next time (and it’s easier to see at higher elevations). I hope You learned something from this, and that it inspires you to do something you rarely do, just like how the moon rarely turns red.
Lanternflies and why you Should Crush them!
Sophia Jorge - 7th Grade
Lanternflies are yucky little bugs! Lanternflies' front wings are a light brown with black spots on them. When they spread their wings out it is a bright red with black dots on them. They are easy to spot. Lanternflies do not harm humans but they do harm crops and trees. Lanternflies eat fruit trees, ornamental trees, woody trees, vegetables, herbs, grains and vines. You can find lanternflies in New Jersey. Also you can find them in other states. For example, New York, Maryland, and Virginia have many lanternflies. It is expected that in the summer of 2023 we will have triple the number of lanternflies that we had this summer.
You should crush lanternflies because they are a threat to trees, plants, crops, orchards and vineyards. Female lanternflies lay over thirty to fifty eggs in a bunch. These eggs blend into a tree so you would never be able to tell if you have baby lanternflies in your yard. Lanternfly eggs can last during the winter although most adult lanternflies freeze to death. At night you can find lanternflies bunched up in groups outside on a tree or in the roots of a tree. If you don’t crush lanternflies then there will be so many in the United States of America.
