Christmas
By Hayoon (Ara) Lee (5th grade)
Beginning
Long ago, Virgin Mary gave birth to her baby on December 25, between the 6 and 4 BC. She named her baby, Jesus, as the angel messenger told her to name him this. Jesus grew up in the city of Nazareth, where he spent time in churches. When he grew up, he was baptized by John the Baptist, in the River Rodan. He was claimed by God, and was called, “The Son Of God”.
Christmas Origin
Christmas was first made for the remembrance of Jesus Christ. The name “Christ-mas” came from Jesus’s name, “Christ”. It is well known for the Christians to remember how He died for them, and then came alive once more.
Why Presents on Christmas?
Presents were symbolic to the Christians, as in the bible; It reminds us how The Three Wise Men gave 3 presents to Jesus, one each.
Why do we have Christmas Trees?
The Christmas tree started as a Pagan tradition to symbolize life during a dark time. Romans actually used to decorate trees around the New Year. Although they started as a winterrime tradition, in the 1500's. trees started to become more and more associated with Christmas, likely because they were being used and decorated in biblical displays and plays. Eventually churches started putting them up with candles on them. This lead to the modern day version- trees in our homes with colored bulbs- a bit safer than a lit candle!
Veterans Day
By Victoria Fattorusso (5th Grade)
Veterans day is a holiday that we, as Americans, celebrate that honors everyone who served in the United States Armed Forces. The Armed Forces are the combined branches of all the military groups in our country which includes the U.S Marines, the U.S Navy, U.S Army, and the U.S Air Force as well as the US Coast Guard.
Most people may think that Veterans day is just like Memorial day and yes it is,in some ways as it helps us to remember and honor people who served in the US Armed Forces. However, Memorial day only celebrates the men and women who died serving in the United States Armed Forces. Veterans day on the other hand is a day that we use to thank everyone who served in the United States Armed Forces whether they died during the war in which they served or not.
When did Veterans day officially acquired its current name?
Veterans day was created in 1926, but it was then known as Armistice day. Armistice means a “peace agreement”, Armistice day is also the commemoration of the truce that brought about the end of World War I.
In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower (DDE) officially changed the name to Veterans day because the holiday was meant to honor all military Veterans. 12 years later the US government declared it as a national holiday to honor everyone who served in the U.S Armed Forces.
What are some interesting facts about veterans day?
Veterans Day is November 11th, the first anniversary of World War 1. Veterans day used to be a day to honor all people who served in World War I, but now it is celebrated for all Veterans that served in all wars that our country was involved in.
In many cities across the country a Parade is held in honor of Veterans day. People who served dress up in their old uniform and participate in the Parade. Another interesting fact is that there are 19 million Veterans in the United States currently.
Did you know that the World War I Armistice was signed on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month? Another interesting fact is that there are 1.9 million Veterans that are women. There are also nine million Veterans over the age of 65 years old.
Meet one of the Veterans from our Armed Forces!
His name is Philip L. Beckerich III and he served in the U.S Marines during the Vietnam War. Mr. Beckerich is now 73 years old and when he was in the US Marines he was only 21 years of age. I met Mr. Beckerich through my neighbor Warren who lives on my Street and served in the Armed Forces but he was not on “active” duty so he recommended I speak with his friend. Mr Beckerich does not live nearby, but I was lucky enough to talk to him over the phone.
Mr B’s job was to fly helicopters during the war. He was a pilot and flew a helicopter whose job included protecting medical helicopters as they rescued other Marines that were hurt and in need of their help. The name of the helicopter that he flew was called a HUEY.
Mr. Beckerich served six years on active duty during the war which means he was in the war and part of the battles for the entire six years.
Even though it was many years ago he was still very emotional when I spoke to him and would not speak about anyone being hurt and only wanted to speak about the lives he helped to save.
People like Mr. Beckerich should be considered heroes for risking their lives to help fight for our country and all that it stands for and this is why Veterans day is one of the most important ways that we can honor our military Veterans.
Mr. Becerich sums up his experience by stating,, “it's not about the medals you get for being brave Victoria, it's about the smiles of the people whose lives you helped save”.
