IBMYP

The Leigh Academy is an International Baccalaureate® (IB) World School.

The International Baccalaureate® (IB) offers high quality programmes of international education to a worldwide community of schools. The aim is to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people, who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.

  • encourages international-mindedness in IB students, starting with a foundation in their own language and culture

  • promotes a positive attitude to learning by challenging students to solve problems, show creativity and resourcefulness, and participate actively in their communities

  • reflects real life by providing a framework that allows students to see the connections among the subjects themselves, and between the subjects and real issues

  • supports the development of communication skills to encourage enquiry, and to allow student reflection and expression

  • emphasises, through the learner profile, the development of the whole student – physically, intellectually, emotionally and ethically

  • is exciting, innovative, satisfying all National Curriculum requirements and providing a framework for all national qualifications and accreditation, including GCSE

The Learner Profile, at the centre of all IB programmes, identifies the attitudes and attributes that we are seeking to develop in Leigh Academy students.

How will I be assessed?

Each subject group has four assessment criteria, with each criterion having a score of 0-8. Each unit will have an assessment focus and your teacher will let you know what this is at the beginning of the unit.

During a reporting period the four scores for each subject are added together and a MYP subject grade out of 7 is generated, using the MYP grade boundaries.

The table opposite gives a description of the four criteria for each of the MYP subject areas. All areas will be assessed at least twice a year.

What subjects will I learn?

The MYP curriculum is split into 8 subject groups:

  • Mathematics,

  • English Language & Literature,

  • Sciences,

  • Individuals & Societies (Geography, History, Ethics),

  • Language Acquisition (French & Spanish), Physical & Health

  • Education,

  • Design (Technology & ICT),

  • Arts (Drama, Music & Art)
