You will explore a range of poetry across the Renaissance, Enlightenment, Romantic and Modernist Periods to develop an appreciation and understanding of the aesthetics and beauty of poetic language and form, and how this has developed in response to the specific values, attitudes and ideas of the times in which it was composed.
You will appreciate how literature is part of our cultural heritage and how, through a study of literary periods, our understanding of history, society and our lives is deepened. Through study of context and analysis of language, students will explore representation of the dominant hegemonic voice, and the voices that are silenced, to understand that texts relate to personal and cultural value systems and that these may change in different historical and cultural contexts. You will explore how textual patterning is aesthetically pleasing, develop an understanding of how literary value may vary across time and culture, and the ways in which texts open up new ways of thinking about ideas and values and as such are considered culturally significant.
