AICE 2024 Exam Series Accommodations
Ida S. Baker High School is committed to access and equity for all students. In all classes the accommodations on your child’s IEP or 504 plan will be followed for class instruction and assessments, to support your child’s success.
Some classes, like all of the AICE courses offered at IBHS, provide the opportunity for college credit by allowing students to take end of course examinations. So, for example, by passing the Cambridge English General Paper Examination, a student would be awarded 3 elective college credits. To be clear, these exams are only for the purpose of awarding college credit, and DO NOT impact the student’s COURSE grade.
Cambridge, through whom the AICE program is offered, is a private, non-American, private entity, and therefore does not have to abide by 504 and IEP accommodations. However, with supporting documentation, we can still request that Cambridge allow for some accommodations, based on a student’s disability. These may not be necessarily the same as offered by an IEP/504 plan, and if a student does not meet the criteria set by Cambridge, the request will be denied.
Currently, Cambridge will allow for up to 25% extra time. Requests for more than 25% are honored for students with:
1. multiple disabilities
2. very severe physical disability or illness
3. visually impairment/needing to Braille papers
4. a speech impediment (oral exams only).
In order for us to request to provide any accommodations on any Cambridge exam, we must have current documentation of the disability. Additional information may be required from a professional, on their letter-head, indicating the diagnosis and reason the student should be given additional time; this documentation must be dated no more than 36 months prior to any Cambridge exam session in which a student will be involved.
To be given permission for possible accommodations, the following guidelines apply:
Access arrangements must be based on evidence of the candidate’s barrier to assessment and
evidence of the candidate’s need. The evidence of need will vary depending on the disability and the
access arrangements applied for. Evidence must meet the following criteria:
• Evidence of need should clearly outline how the disability, illness or learning difficulty presents a
barrier to the assessment.
• Evidence must be dated within three years of the exam and verified by a medical professional who
must sign and date the evidence and include details of their relevant qualifications.
• Supporting evidence must be in English.
• Where relevant, the supporting evidence must contain literacy assessments for the candidate. These
tests should provide standardized scores for candidates showing them to be ‘below average’.
‘Below average’ means one deviation below the mean on a nationally standardized test taken within four
years of the exam series. It does not mean ‘below average standard’ in a center.
• If English is not the candidate’s first language this is not a valid reason for an access arrangement.
Principles of access arrangements:
• Access arrangements must not give the candidate an unfair advantage over others, and will not be allowed
if they affect the assessment objectives as outlined in the Cambridge course syllabus.
•All candidates are assessed according to the same marking criteria, so their grades and certificates have
the same validity and are a true reflection of each candidate’s attainment.
• A candidate may qualify for an access arrangement in one type of assessment but not in another.
PLEASE BE AWARE: Even if you have provided current documentation for your student, it may not include all of the details required. Please speak with me if you have any concerns about this Cambridge policy, or complete the attached form to share additional information that may help you satisfy one of the “exceptional cases” requirements.
