People who feel stressed can find a supportive voice at the end of a telephone line in Berkshire County. The local chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness has set up a number that people can call to speak about coping with tough times, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. The new "warm line" is funded by the Berkshire United Way, The Taconic Foundation, the Williamstown Community Chest and the Northern Berkshire United Way. Here's how it works: Until 8 p.m. each day, calls to 413-445-1136 will be answered by a NAMI staff member or a trained volunteer with "lived experience" of mental health issues and trauma, the agency says. In other hours, people who leave their phone number and first name will be contacted within 24 hours, the agency says. All calls are confidential.
