LCHS Computer Science students compete at US Capitol in Washington DC

Students from Lee County High School not only participated but also secured positions in the Congressional App Challenge. They represented NC District 9 in the #HouseofCode event on April 11th in the U.S. Capitol in Washington DC. Their innovative application not only showcased their exceptional skills in technology and programming but also highlighted the importance of STEM education in shaping future leaders. As a nationwide competition encouraging students to pursue careers in STEM and computer science, artificial intelligence presents an opportunity to empower a broader audience to engage in coding. Their work will also be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year.

Carpentry students compete in 2024 Connect for Success SHED build.

Connect for Success NC SHED Build competition took place April 16, 17 &18 t the Lee County Fairgrounds. Six high school construction teams competed to see who could complete their shed being closest to code in the 3 day time frame. Teams learned the value of time management, team work, communication, determination, patience, understanding, and even forgiveness. Each team was assigned general contractors to serve as mentors and guides for them. This event would not have been possible without the support of these contractors. We would like to say a very special THANK YOU to Carolina Commercial Contractors for supplying the lumber for this event and for  sponsoring our Southern Lee High School  Team along with Southern Cross Construction Company. Second place was awarded to the SLHS SHED team. Again, thank you to all who help make this event happen.

Elaine Marshall's, NC Secretary of State, visit to  Southern Lee High School

During their visit to the NC State Fair this past fall it just so happened that SLHS FCCLA and SLHA AOBF crossed paths with NC Secretary of State, Elaine Marshall. After a quik exchange of emails a date was set for Ms. Marshall to visit Southern Lee High School. The visit was organized by CTE teachers and CTSO advisors, Melinda Bremer (FCCLA) and Michelle White (AOBF). Ms. Marshall discussed her roles in being Secretary of State, spoke about small business start up in NC, explained to students the importance of  banning counterfit items, and also shared insight on scams and how to be aware of them. She mentioned the impact that 4-H and Home Economics had in her life growing up as a farm girl.  Read more about her visit to Southern Lee High School here.

2023 Sanford Contractors Construction Academy Summer Internship Wrap-up

Students in our Sanford Contractors Construction Academy, created with Central Carolina Community College and ApprenticeshipNC, not only earned credentials and got valuable experience.  At the end of the nine week program, six of the 11 students completing the academy had already been hired by the company to work wither part or full time and discussions were underway to hire even more based upon the students current educational commitments.

Designed as a pre-apprenticeship "learn and earn experience", the academy was created by Sanford Contractors to help high school students seriously interested in construction get hands-on experience and a taste for what a career in the industry might be like.

Plans are already underway for the 2024 Sanford Contractors Construction Academy. Students (grades 11 & 12) who are interested in a career within the construction field are encouraged to speak with their Career Development Coordinator at their respective school about the program.  More information can also be found at the Sanford Contractors Construction Academy tab on this website.
