The Written Examination lasts 2 hours 30 minutes and consists of three sections. It is worth 80 marks which counts for 40% of your final IGCSE Drama Grade. The questions in the Written Examination are based on performance work you have completed in class: directing, designing and performing two pre-release play extracts and one group devised piece you collaboratively created and performed in front of an audience.
The examination paper is structured in the following manner.
Cambridge sends up the extracts of two plays which consists of the pre-release material. The teacher will share the two play extracts with you in class once it is made available. We will complete a detailed table read of the play together as we discuss important information about the characters, plot, directing approaches, design possibilities and acting suggestions. Then, you will workshop the play in class to bring it to life by each taking on the roles of director, designer and actor in turn. You will be responsible for documenting all information which comes out from this process by making detailed notes on the script provided to you.
Within the class, you will also work on one group devised piece which will be refined and polished for the Coursework. This same group devised piece will be first performed in class to a smaller 'test' audience from whom you can gather some feedback. Throughout the process of creating the devised piece, you will document the choices you make at each stage of the work. After the performance, you will also evaluate the final result in terms of how it met your expectations or not.
The exam questions will then ask you about the artistic and creative decisions you would make in the role of director OR designer OR actor. You should already have all the required information from the work we have completed in class. During the Written Examination you will need to communicate these ideas effectively in writing by responding to either short-answer questions or extended-response questions.
There are two compulsory questions to answer in this section. One question is worth 10 marks and the other is worth 15 marks.
The answers must consist of extended responses, which means short essays.
